INTRODUCTION Haematuria is one of the clinical manifestations of sickle cell nephropathy. Although dipstick urinalysis detects haemoglobin and by extension haematuria; it does not confirm haematuria. Urine sediment microscopy confirms haematuria and constitutes a non-invasive "renal biopsy". The need to correlate dipstick urinalysis and urine sediment microscopy findings becomes important becau...
Background. Progressive proteinuria indicates worsening of the condition in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and hence its quantification guides clinician in decision making and treatment planning. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of spot dipstick analysis and urinary protein-creatinine ratio (UPCR) in hypertensive disease of pregnancy for predicting 24-hour proteinuria. Subjects and Meth...
Objective: To evaluate the capability of ascitic fluid dipstick results for pH, glucose, and protein in order to predict a low serum-ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) at the bedside of the patient in the emergency department (ED). Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted during one year in the ED of Afzalipour hospital in Kerman, Iran. ...
Background: Acute pancreatitis is one of the most serious complications of ERCP. Early diagnosis of post ERCP pancreatitis helps physicians to provide intensive care and possible medical treatment as early as possible. Trypsinogen-2 in urine is a good diagnostic and prognostic marker of acute pancreatitis. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of urinary trypsinogen-2 dipstick test for e...
The reagent test strip Combur-9 Test-RL (Boehringer Mannheim) and the 8-SG Multistix (Ames) were simultaneously evaluated as a rapid method for screening urines for normality. Differences between the two methods are for a considerable part determined by adjustment of the lowest detection limits of the leukocyte and erythrocyte dipstick fields. Patient populations (243 specimens presented to the...
OBJECTIVES We investigated the validity of the dipstick method (Mossman Associates Inc. USA) and the expired CO method to distinguish between smokers and nonsmokers. We also elucidated the related factors of the two methods. METHODS This study included 244 smokers and 50 ex-smokers, recruited from smoking cessation clinics at 4 local public health centers, who had quit for over 4 weeks. We ca...
AIM The aim of this study was to underscore problems associated with the dipstick test and determination of protein concentration alone in spot-urine (P-test) compared with spot-urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (P/Cr test) and to determine whether urine collection for 24-h test was complete. MATERIAL AND METHODS Dipstick and P/Cr tests were performed simultaneously in 357 random spot-urine s...
OBJECTIVES To determine whether routine urinalysis in the antenatal period facilitates diagnosis of pre-eclampsia. Can routine urinalysis during pregnancy be discontinued in women with normal results of dipstick urinalysis and microscopy at the first antenatal visit? DESIGN Prospective observational study. SETTING A metropolitan public hospital and a private hospital in Sydney (NSW). PART...
This study compares the performance of a 3-h dipstick trehalose test with GLABRATA RTT, a new commercially available 20-min test for the rapid identification of Candida glabrata. With the exception of blood agar, GLABRATA RTT gave reliable results with all media tested and was always superior to the dipstick test.
BACKGROUND Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), a severe parasitic disease, could be fatal if diagnosis and treatment is delayed. Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a skin related outcome, is a potential reservoir for the spread of VL. Diagnostic tests available for VL such as tissue aspiration are invasive and painful although they are capable of evaluating the treatment response. Serological...
