Bioleaching is the extraction of specific metals from ores by using bacteria. The typical bioleaching strain Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans utilizes energy from the oxidation of ironand sulfur-containing minerals (Baker & Banfield, 2003) and grows around pH 2.0. As bacteria grow optimally within a specific narrow range of pH, the fluctuation of environmental acidity can bring certain disadvanta...

This study deals with bioleaching of the low grade uranium ore of Saghand mine in Iran using a mixed culture of mesophilic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans). Experiments were carried out in shaking flask examining the effect of temperature, initial ferrous ion concentration, pulp density and particle size. Variations of ...

The use of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria in the process of copper and iron leaching from chalcopyrite coming from Kotlina Ktodzka was investigated. The influence of the mineral content in the leaching solution the pH value and refinement of chalcopyrite on the subsequent stages of leaching was established. The process was described by the 1st order reaction inhibited by one of the products...

In vivo force microscopy measurements of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans revealed a repulsive force that was due to the presence of extracellular polymers on the bacterium's surface. Measured force-distance profiles were fit to steric force theory to estimate the density and thickness values of these exopolymers. The polymer densities were 3.4 x 10(16) to 7.1 x 10(16) molecules m(-2), and the eq...

Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans type strain DLC-5, isolated from Wudalianchi in Heihe of Heilongjiang Province, China. Here, we present the draft genome of strain DLC-5 which contains 4,232,149 bp in 2745 contigs with 57.628% GC content and includes 32,719 protein-coding genes and 64 tRNA-encoding genes. The genome sequence can be accessed at DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under the accession no. JNNH0000000...

We announce here the genome sequence of a marine acidophilic sulfur-oxidizing bacterium, Acidithiobacillus sp. strain SH. The bacterium has potential for use in bioleaching of sulfide ores from seawater and contains a noble gene for thiosulfate quinone oxidoreductase in addition to specific genes for the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds.

The acidithiobacilli are sulfur-oxidizing acidophilic bacteria that thrive in both natural and anthropogenic low pH environments. They contribute to processes that lead to the generation of acid rock drainage in several different geoclimatic contexts, and their properties have long been harnessed for the biotechnological processing of minerals. Presently, the genus is composed of seven validate...

The iron oxidation system from sulfur-grown Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 cells was reconstituted in vitro. Purified rusticyanin, cytochrome c, and aa(3)-type cytochrome oxidase were essential for reconstitution. The iron-oxidizing activity of the reconstituted system was 3.3-fold higher than that of the cell extract from which these components were purified.
