We report an unusual case of granulocytic sarcoma involving the temporal bone. The occurrence of this tumor usually heralds acute myelogenous leukemia or the onset of the blastic phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Recognition of this rare entity is important, because early aggressive chemotherapy can cause regression of the tumor, as in our case, and thus improve patient longevity.
Chloroma, or granulocytic sarcoma, is a rare extramedullary solid hematologic cancer, found concomitant with acute myeloid leukemia. It is infrequently associated with other myeloproliferative disorders or chronic myelogenous leukemia. Chloroma of the testis after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is particularly sparsely represented in the literature. It is suggested that an appropriate p...
The alpha4beta1 integrin very late activation antigen-4 (VLA-4) is an alpha4 (CD49d)/beta1 (CD29) heterodimer. It plays a key role in the adhesion of both hematopoietic progenitor cells and leukemic blast cells to bone marrow stromal cells which express the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) or produce fibronectin. VLA-4 expression has been associated with bone-marrow minimal residual d...
In normal human megakaryocytes, we identified a delayed rectifier type of voltage-gated outward K+ current (DRK). In two human megakaryoblastic tumor cell lines (DAMI, CHRF-288-11) and the human erythroleukemia cell line (HEL) the DRK current was not detected. To determine if the absence of the DRK current in the tumor cells is the result of the underlying malignant state, we examined megakaryo...
Documented central nervous system (CNS) involvement in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), unlike acute lymphocytic leukemia, is relatively uncommon [1 , 2] . CNS involvement in AML is reported to occur in 6%-17% of cases [1-4]. It is expected that improvements in therapy with increased frequency of remission and prolonged survival will lead to further increases in clinical CNS involvement in AML...
A transplantable myelogenous leukemia of an inbred Wistar/Furth rat has been established in tissue culture and cloned. The resulting transplantable leukemia line demonstrates in vitro doubling time of 20 hr, colony-forming efficiency of 5% in liquid and methylcellulos-containing medium, and a saturation density of 3.0 x 106 cells/sq cm in liquid medium. Following intraperitoneal inoculation, ne...
BACKGROUND Flavopiridol is a protein-bound, cytotoxic, cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor. A phase II trial of flavopiridol followed by ara-C and mitoxantrone with flavopiridol given by 1-h bolus for adults with newly-diagnosed, poor-risk acute myelogenous leukemia yielded 67% complete remission with median disease-free survival of 13.6 months. DESIGN AND METHODS We compared bolus flavopiridol...
Plasma and urine levels of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) and of cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) were measured in 35 normal subjects, in 24 patients with nonneoplastic diseases (iron deficiency anemia, peptic ulcer, and cholelithiasis), and in 50 leukemic patients. The leukemic group included patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, chroni...
