We combine classical empirical potentials and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to characterize the catalyst/electrode interface of a promising device for artificial photosynthesis. This system consists of inorganic Ru-polyoxometalate (Ru-POM) molecules that are supported by a graphitic substrate functionalized with organic dendrimers. The experimental atomic-scale characterization o...

introduction: soil structural stability affects the profitability and sustainability of agricultural systems. particle size distribution (psd) and aggregate stability are the important characteristics of soil. aggregate stability has a significant impact on the development of the root system, water and carbon cycle and soil resistance against soil erosion. soil aggregate stability, defined as t...

The influence of particulate organic material (POM) and the contribution of biomass smoke on air quality and visibility remain a paramount issue in addressing regional haze concerns in US national parks. Measurements during the Yosemite Aerosol Characterization Study (July–September 2002) indicated an aerosol dominated by POM ( 70% of identified species) and strongly influenced by biomass smoke...

In a semiarid region of central Iran, effects of parent materials, physiography and landscape position, land use, andmanagement practices on association of organic carbon with secondary (aggregates) particles and aggregate stability canhave important consequences in terms of carbon sequestration and budgeting, deciding on the proper land use strategy andsuitable soil conservation practices. It ...

A particle-into-liquid sampler (PILS) was coupled with a total organic carbon analyzer (TOC) and two ion chromatographs (IC) to enable high time-resolution measurements of water-soluble ions and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) by a single sampling and analytical setup. The new high time-resolution measurement system, the PILS-TOC-IC, was able to provide essential chemical and physical infor...

In this study, oil shale combustion emission measurements were conducted in a 60 kWth Circulating Fluidized Bed test facility located laboratory-type environment. A comprehensive set of instruments including nitrate-ion-based Chemical Ionization Atmospheric Pressure interface Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, Soot-Particle Aerosol and Potential (PAM) chamber was utilized to investigate the chem...

Ten organoimido polyoxometalate (POM)-based chromophores have been synthesized and studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS), Stark and Resonance Raman spectroscopies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. HRS β0 values for chromophores with resonance electron donors are significant (up to 139 × 10-30 esu, ∼5 times greater than that of the DAS+ cation), but systems with no donor, o...

Downward fluxes of particulate organic matter (POM) are the major process for sequestering atmospheric CO2 into aquatic sediments for thousands of years. Budget calculations of the biological carbon pump are heavily based on the ratio between carbon export (sedimentation) and remineralization (release to the atmosphere). Current methodologies determine microbial dynamics on POM using closed ves...

A new azide functionalized Anderson polyoxometalate was synthesized, fully characterized and subsequently used as a building block for further POM post-functionalization with organic compounds through a copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. Optimization of the reaction conditions led to an efficient, fast, convenient and versatile POM coupling method.

Filter-feeding invertebrates consume phytoplankton and detritus and therefore serve as important mediators of the exchange of materials from nearshore pelagic to intertidal benthic ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the linkages between nearshore and intertidal systems on temperate rocky reefs on the coasts of Oregon, USA, and New Zealand’s South Island. We used differences in the concentrations of...
