The non-destructive testing of austenitic welds using ultrasound plays an important role in the assessment of the structural integrity of safety critical structures. The internal microstructure of these welds is highly scattering and can lead to the obscuration of defects when investigated by traditional imaging algorithms. This paper proposes an alternative objective method for the detection o...

A system is presented that allows the visualization of the whole welding process. Factors that can lead to bad welds can be monitored. Methods to optimize the welding process are outlined and a possible "on-line control" is discussed. In addition, schemes are presented for the analysis of the welding process to identify defects in the welding equipment that will cause faulty welds.

July-August 2012 Imagine you fly home from vacation with your one-and-ahalf-year-old son who is traveling for free as a “lap child.” In the airport parking lot, you put him into his forwardfacing car seat, where he sits much more contentedly than he did in the rear-facing one that was mandatory until his first birthday. After he falls asleep on the way home, you transfer him to his crib without...

The paper aims at presenting a framework for visual inspection and defect detection of steel pipe welds in chemical and nuclear power plants. Pipe welds are examined by means of X-ray (XR) and ultrasound (US) sensors; collected data are separately processed in order to extract features used in the fusion phase to detect and measure possible defects. Results obtained on real images are presented...

Austenite formation and its decomposition control the final microstructure and performance of steel welds. This paper presents an in-situ characterization of austenite formation and its decomposition in both the fusion zone (FZ) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of an Fe-C-Al-Mn steel using time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) with synchrotron radiation. Measurement of X-ray diffraction spectra a...

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively new welding technique where metals are joined through mechanical stirring. Due to its numerous advantages over older welding methods, it has been implemented in an increasing number of industries. However, there are remaining challenges to be overcome in FSW. One of the most serious is its reliance on accurate weld parameters. Additionally, faults or ...
