An analysis of the impact of orphanhood at antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation on HIV outcomes in Asia included 4300 children; 51% were male. At ART initiation, 1805 (42%) were non-orphans (median age: 3 years), 1437 (33%) were single orphans (6 years) and 1058 (25%) were double orphans (7 years). Ten-year post-ART survival was 93.4-95.2% across orphan categories. Clinic transfers were high...
Thanks to the development of antiretroviral agents to control HIV replication, HIV infection has turned from a fatal disease into a treatable chronic infection. The present work collects the opinions of several experts on the efficacy and safety of recently approved second generation of integrase inhibitors and, in particular, on the role of this new class of drugs in antiretroviral therapy. Long and short term side effects of antiretroviral drugs are not fully understood yet. Here a case of reversible blood count changes following post exposure prophylaxis with tenofovir/emtricitabin and lopinavir/ritonavir is reported. We propose that antiretroviral drugs used in post exposure prophylaxis may have a significant impact on hematopoiesis.
Generic and brand name antiretroviral drugs are becoming increasingly available in developing countries. We analyzed 6 antiretroviral medications from 4 international sources for drug content. The active ingredient in tested drug products was within 15% of the labeled amount (range, -12% to +15%) for drugs that were properly stored.
BACKGROUND Identification of the determinants of access to investigational drugs is important to promote equity and scientific validity in clinical research. We aimed to analyze factors associated with the use of experimental antiretrovirals in Italy. METHODS We studied participants in the Italian Cohort of Antiretroviral-Naive Patients (ICoNA). All patients 18 years or older who had started ...

As HIV-infected patients live longer, they develop long-term manifestations of chronic HIV infection and/or treatment complications. Progressive liver disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in this patient group. Underlying hepatitis B and/or C virus infection is extremely common...
