Many categories of objects, such as human faces, can be naturally viewed as a composition of several different layers. For example, a bearded face with glasses can be decomposed into three layers: a layer for glasses, a layer for the beard and a layer for other permanent facial features. While modeling such a face with a linear subspace model could be very difficult, layer separation allows for...

cohesion is an indispensable linguistic feature in discourse analysis. lexicald such a differe cohesion and conjunction in particular as two crucial elements to textual cohesion and comprehension has been the focus of a wide range of studies up to now. yet the relationship between the open register and cohesive devices has not been thoroughly investigated in discourse studies. this study concen...

The UK Drug Utilization Research Group's (DURG) Regional Meeting 'New Horizons: Pharmacovigilance' was hosted by the Drug Safety Research Unit (DSRU) at Southampton on 19 May 2000. Opening the meeting, Dr Keith Beard, UK DURG chairman, welcomed delegates and speakers and thanked the DSRU team for hosting the meeting. With reference to the theme of the meeting - new horizons in pharmacovigilance...

In the book e Trophoblast and the Origins of Cancer, the authors present the pioneering work of Dr. John Beard, the English scientist who 100 years ago may have solved the cancer riddle. It was Dr. Beard who rst suggested that pancreatic enzymes, above and beyond their well-known digestive function, represent the body’s main defense against cancer. In Trophoblast, Dr. Gonzalez shows how contemp...

In this paper a methodology is proposed to segment beard and glasses on frontal face images. Active Appearance Model (AAM) generative power is used to find the equivalent face without beard nor glasses. These artefacts can be detected and then segmented by difference between the original face image and its free-from-artefact equivalent. We replace the segmented pixels with non-beard and non-gla...

We prove restrictions on when a Costas array can contain a large corner region whose entries are all 0. In particular, we prove a 2010 conjecture due to Russo, Erickson and Beard. We constrain the vectors joining pairs of 1s in a Costas array by establishing a series of results on its number of “mirror pairs,” namely pairs of these vectors having the same length but opposite slopes.

We apply combinatorial arguments to establish structural constraints on Costas arrays. We prove restrictions on when a Costas array can contain a large corner region whose entries are all 0. In particular, we prove a 2010 conjecture due to Russo, Erickson and Beard. We then constrain the vectors joining pairs of 1s in a Costas array by establishing a series of results on its number of “mirror p...
