– Molecular dynamics computer simulations are used to investigate the dynamics of a binary mixture of charged (Yukawa) particles with a size–ratio of 1:5. We find that the system undergoes a phase transition where the large particles crystallize while the small particles remain in a fluid–like (delocalized) phase. Upon decreasing temperature below the transition, the small particles become incr...

The influence of size differences, shape, mass, and persistent motion on phase separation in binary mixtures has been intensively studied. Here we focus on the exclusive role of diffusivity differences in binary mixtures of equal-sized particles. We find an effective attraction between the less diffusive particles, which are essentially caged in the surrounding species with the higher diffusion...

We study the capture of dark matter particles by neutron stars in close binary systems. By performing a direct numerical simulation, we find that there is a sizable amplification of the rate of dark matter capture by each of the companions. In the case of the binary pulsar PSR J1906+0746 with the orbital period of 4 hours the amplification factor is approximately equal to 3.5. This amplificatio...

We propose a method for simulating the behaviour of small clusters of particles that explicitly accounts for all mean-field and binary-correlation effects. Our approach leads to a set of variational equations that can be used to study both the dynamics and thermodynamics of these clusters. As an illustration of this method, we explore the BCS-BEC crossover in the simple model of four fermions, ...

In the first part of two section paper, a mathematical model of the fluidized bed reactor in the presence of in-situ water adsorbent for methanol synthesis is assessed. The bubbling two-phase regime is applied to model the fluidization concept. The binary adsorbent and catalyst particles system can be separated from each other based on their density difference. The heavy catalyst particles tend...

We investigated the evolution of the black hole binary formed by the merging of two galaxies, each containing a central massive black hole. Our main goal here is to determine if the black hole binary can merge through the hardening by dynamical friction and the gravitational wave radiation. We performed N-body simulations of the merging of two galaxies with a wide range of the total number of p...

We present an efficient and robust method based on Monte Carlo simulations for predicting crystal structures at finite temperature. We apply this method, which is surprisingly easy to implement, to a variety of systems, demonstrating its effectiveness for hard, attractive, and anisotropic interactions, binary mixtures, semi-long-range soft interactions, and truly long-range interactions where t...

Binary Pt/Pd nanoparticles were synthesized by localized overgrowth of Pd on cubic Pt seeds for the investigation of electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation. The binary particles exhibited much less self-poisoning and a lower activation energy relative to Pt nanocubes, consistent with the single crystal study.

We present a density-functional study of a binary phase-separating mixture of soft core particles immersed in a random matrix of quenched soft core particles of larger size. This is a model for a binary polymer mixture immersed in a cross-linked rigid polymer network. Using the replica "trick" for quenched-annealed mixtures we derive an explicit density functional theory that treats the quenche...

We show theoretically that a binary fluid characterized on a mesoscopic scale by purely repulsive short-range interactions without cores possesses an effective attraction between like particles. This "soft depletion effect" is a generic phenomenon driving a mixing-demixing transition in a binary system with pure repulsions.
