One of the main challenges of bioenergy sector development is the cost of biomass supply chain resulted from inefficient bioenergy production from low energy content biomass feedstocks, high logistics costs of biomass production, handling and transportation. Another main aspect to be considered is that the configuration of a biofuel supply chain can be dynamic which evolve over time. Growing de...

Considerable interest has been focused on miniature biofuel cells (BFCs) because of their portability and possibility to be implantable. Origami devices with hollow channels will provide novel insight into the assembly methods of miniature BFCs. Herein a miniature origami BFC has been fabricated from a MnO2-graphite flake consumed solid-state cathode. For further practical applications, miniatu...

To avoid costly biomass recovery in photosynthetic microbial biofuel production, we genetically modified cyanobacteria to produce and secrete fatty acids. Starting with introducing an acyl-acyl carrier protein thioesterase gene, we made six successive generations of genetic modifications of cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 wild type (SD100). The fatty acid secretion yield was increased ...

Metabolic engineering has developed microbial cell factories that can convert renewable carbon sources into biofuels. Current molecular biology tools can efficiently alter enzyme levels to redirect carbon fluxes toward biofuel production, but low product yield and titer in large bioreactors prevent the fulfillment of cheap biofuels. There are three major roadblocks preventing economical biofuel...

This paper describes a methodology to explore the (future) spatial distribution of biofuel crops in Europe. Two main types of biofuel crops are distinguished: biofuel crops used for the production of biodiesel or bioethanol, and second-generation biofuel crops. A multiscale, multi-model approach is used in which biofuel crops are allocated over the period 2000–2030. The area of biofuel crops at...

Powering future generations of implanted medical devices will require cumbersome transcutaneous energy transfer or harvesting energy from the human body. No functional solution that harvests power from the body is currently available, despite attempts to use the Seebeck thermoelectric effect, vibrations or body movements. Glucose fuel cells appear more promising, since they produce electrical e...

We report the first example of a biofuel cell operating in organic solvents. The cell utilises glucose oxidase and bilirubin oxidase immobilised on nanoporous gold. The power output of the cell decreases with increasing solvent hydrophobicity in the alcohols, methanol (MeOH), ethanol (EtOH), 1-propanol (PrOH), 1-butanol (BuOH) and 1-pentanol (PeOH).
