The classical penetration theory was corrected and then applied for the semi-theoretical prediction of mass transfer coefficients kLa in a slurry bubble column operated in the homogeneous regime. The gas-liquid contact time was expressed as a ratio of bubble surface to the rate of surface formation. These terms were defined for the case of oblate ellipsoidal bubbles formed under homogeneous flo...

The gravity-driven migration of N ≥ 1 bubble(s) near a free surface is addressed within the assumption of negligible inertial effects by solving a boundary-integral equation at each time and assuming axisymmetric free surface and bubble(s) with axis of revolution aligned with the gravity. The implemented boundary element method permits one to accurately invert at a reasonable cpu time cost the ...

An investigation of surface cleaning using a swarm of gas bubbles within an acoustically activated stream is presented. Electrolysis of water at Pt microwires (100 μm diameter) to produce both hydrogen and oxygen bubbles is shown to enhance the extent of ultrasonic surface cleaning in a free flowing water stream containing an electrolyte (0.1 M Na2SO4) and low surfactant concentration (2 mM SDS...

A fundamental difference between fluids and solids is their response to applied shear. Solids possess static shear moduli, while fluids do not. Complex fluids such as foams display an intermediate response to shear with nontrivial frequency-dependent shear moduli. In this paper, we conduct coordinated experiments and numerical simulations of model foams subjected to boundary-driven oscillatory ...

We investigate the effect of microbubbles on Taylor-Couette flow by means of direct numerical simulations. We employ an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with a gas-fluid coupling based on the point-force approximation. Added mass, drag, lift, and gravity are taken into account in the modeling of the motion of the individual bubble. We find that very dilute suspensions of small non-deformable bubble...

-The effect of elevated pressure on the stability of the homogeneous bubbly flow regime in a gas-liquid bubble column is examined. Experiments were performed in a 0.15 m diameter bubble column operated at pressures in the range 0.1-1.3 MPa with nitrogen as the gas phase and water as the liquid phase. The transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous flow regime was determined by two procedures. ...

We show that radiation dominated accretion discs are likely to suffer from a “photon bubble” instability similar to that described by Arons in the context of accretion onto neutron star polar caps. The instability requires a magnetic field for its existence. In an asymptotic regime appropriate to accretion discs, we find that the overstable modes obey the remarkably simple dispersion relation

This paper develops a procedure for estimation of the rise velocity of a swarm of large gas bubbles in a bubble column operating in the churn-turbulent flow regime. The large bubble swarm velocity is estimated by introducing two correction factors into the classical Davies—Taylor (1950) relation for rise of a single spherical cap bubble in a liquid » b "0.71Jgd b (SF) (AF) . The scale correctio...

For sufficiently slow rates of strain, flowing foam can exhibit inhomogeneous flows. The nature of these flows is an area of active study in both two-dimensional model foams and three dimensional foam. Recent work in three-dimensional foam has identified three distinct regimes of flow [S. Rodts, J. C. Baudez, and P. Coussot, Europhys. Lett. 69, 636 (2005)]. Two of these regimes are identified w...
