Problem statement: Central vein catheterization (CVC) is a usual and accepted way for monitoring hemodynamic status or prescribing medication in seriously ill patients. internal jugular catheterization, one of the most acceptable roots because its accessibility ability to compress vein, but standard method explained Robert Hedges, clinical procedures textbook, there significant instruction need...

PURPOSE To compare the success and immediate complication rates of the anatomical landmark method (group 1) and the radiologically (combined real-time ultrasound and fluoroscopy) guided technique (group 2) in the placement of central venous catheters in emergent hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was performed prospectively in a randomized manner. The success and immediate ...

The supraclavicular approach of subclavian vein catheterization is associated with the lowest incidence of malposition. We report two cases of unusual malpositions seen during central venous cathelerization of subclavian vein via supraclavicular approach. Literature search did not reveal such malpositions. The possible cause for the malposition and method to prevent it is discussed.

BACKGROUND Real-time ultrasound (US) in central venous catheterization is superior to pre-procedure US. However, moving real-time US into routine practice is impeded by its perceived expense and difficulty. Currently, pre-procedure US and landmark (LM) methods are most widely used. We investigated these techniques in internal jugular vein (IJV) catheterization in respect of operator experience,...

Patients and methods Eight positions were tested in each patient. The positions were classified by maneuver and ultrasound images of each position were stored. Two factors were determined at each position: “safety width” (the part of the internal jugular vein that did not overlap with the carotid artery) and “overlap width” (the part of the internal jugular vein that did overlap with the caroti...

PURPOSE Postoperative brachial plexus lesion has been reported only rarely after catheterization of the right internal jugular vein (RIJV), and then is usually considered to be the result of puncture hematoma. CLINICAL FEATURES We here present the case of plexus brachialis injury after catheterization of the RIJV with ultrasonography showing direct compression of the plexus brachialis by a ce...

While the supraclavicular approach to the subclavian vein has been described since 1965, it is generally employed much less often than the "traditional" infraclavicular approach. Although randomized trials are lacking, the best evidence suggests that the supraclavicular approach has a number of important advantages to the infraclavicular approach. The landmarks and relative merits of the proced...

The multiple indications for central venous catheters (CVCs) include parenteral nutrition, intravascular depletion, access for vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiopulmonary arrest, difficult peripheral intravenous (IV) access and long-term IV access for medications, such as antibiotics. While these catheters can be life saving, they are also associated with significant risks. ...

Editor—We read with great interest the article by Tokumine and colleagues. The authors have introduced and demonstrated the safest method for central venous catheterization under real-time ultrasound guidance using the long-axis view of the vessel with the in-plane needle approach. As they have pointed out, the ultrasound-guided procedure with the short-axis view of the vessel with the out-of-p...

A central venous catheter tip located too high into the superior vena cava (SVC) is known to be a strong risk factor for central venous thrombosis and subsequent SVC syndrome. We report herein the usefulness of catheterizing the implanted port catheter lumen as a salvage procedure to circumvent a complete SVC occlusion in a breast cancer patient. Because the standard central vein catheterizatio...
