Cefatrizine, a new orally administered cephalosporin, was tested against 400 clinical isolates. Cefatrizine had excellent activity against gram-positive cocci, inhibiting all except enterococci at minimal inhibitory concentrations below 1 mug/ml. Cefatrizine inhibited the majority of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Salmonella at concentrations below 12.5 mug/ml. ...

The diffusibility of bacampicillin, ampicillin, cephalothin, and cephapirin into human interstitial fluid was investigated by using crossover studies. We compared bacampicillin with ampicillin and found that bacampicillin was better absorbed after oral administration. Blood, interstitial fluid, and urine levels were consistently higher in volunteers who received bacampicillin. We compared cepha...

Clinical isolates of Providencia and Proteus with relative aminoglycoside resistance were tested for susceptibility to combinations of gentamicin or tobramycin with cephalothin or cefazolin. The minimal bactericidal concentration of aminoglycoside for one-third of the strains was reduced by fourfold or more in the presence of one-fourth of the minimal bactericidal concentration of either cephal...

The in vitro activity of cephalexin, cephaloridine, cephalothin, cephapirin, cefoxitin, cephamycin C, cepharadine and cefazolin was determined against 443 isolates of bacteria. At a concentration of 12.5 mug/ml, all of the cephalosporins inhibited more than 60% of the isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. At the same concentration, cephalexin, cephaloridine, cephalothin, cephapirin, cephamycin C a...

Biological beta-lactam antibiotic-inactivating activities were detected in bacteriuria and suppurating pleural fluids. Clinical specimens were sterilized with membrane filters and the amounts of ampicillin and/or cephalothin which were being inactivated by 1 ml of each filtrate were determined. In general, filtrates which originally yielded Klebsiella sp. tended to show activity against ampicil...

Cephanone is less active against gram-positive organisms but is more active against Escherichia coli than cephalothin. Activity against Klebsiella, Proteus mirabilis and Salmonella is similar to cephalothin. Some Enterobacter strains are"susceptible to 8//g/ml or less. Cephanone is relatively resistant to hydrolysis by gram-negative beta-lactamases. It is not a competitive inhibitor of the hydr...

A survey of clinical isolates from a hospital laboratory showed that Escherichia coli could be grouped into three classes of beta-lactam-antibiotic resistance by results of routine susceptibility testing to ampicillin, cephalothin, and carbenicillin. E. coli highly resistant to ampicillin and carbenicillin but not to cephalothin (class I) were found to have one of two levels of R factor-mediate...

These studies extend the recent observation that cefazolin is inactivated to a greater extent than cephaloridine by some strains of penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, whereas cephalothin undergoes little if any inactivation. In Mueller-Hinton broth (inoculum, 3 x 10(6)) 100 recently isolated strains had minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) </= 2 mug/ml for cephalothin and cephal...

The ability of the clinically used cephalosporins: cephalothin, cefotaxime and cefotiam to induce lipid peroxidation (LPO) and renal damage was compared to that of nephrotoxic cephaloridine under in vivo conditions. Glutathione was measured in rat liver or in renal cortex as non-protein sulfhydryls. LPO was measured in plasma, renal cortex and liver by the generation of malondialdehyde or as th...

The objectives of this study were to determine the occurrence of Campylobacter spp. in live chickens sold at wet markets in Selangor, Malaysia and the multidrug resistance (MDR) profiles of the isolates. Cloacal swabs were taken from the chickens before slaughter and their caecal mucosae were swabbed after slaughter. Of the 90 chickens examined, 68 (75.6%) were positive for Campylobacter. Campy...
