We experienced two cases of esophageal web accompanying severe stricture that were treated by endoscopic incisions with an insulated-tip knife (IT-knife). With attention paid to the mucosa at the stricture, the lesion was incised with an IT-knife without complications. Sato's curved laryngoscope was used even in cervical esophageal lesions and an excellent field was secured.

Noxious chemical stimulation of the rat nasal mucosa with mustard oil induces the expression of Fos-like immunoreactivity in trigeminal and other brain stem neurons which contribute to upper airway protective reflexes such as sneezing, coughing and apnea. To examine the role of nociceptive processing in the upper cervical spinal cord, we investigated the Fos-like immunoreactivity of the brainst...

After intraventricular injection of 99mTc antimony sulfide in rabbits (n = 12) and cats (n = 14), radiolabeled colloid was imaged passing into the nasal mucosa and subsequently into the cervical lymph nodes. The cervical lymph nodes accounted for about 12% of the injected dose in rabbits sacrificed at 22-24 hr after injection and about 5% of the injected dose in cats sacrificed at 5-6 hr after ...

INTRODUCTION Robotic technology has been safely integrated into thoracic and abdominopelvic surgery, and the early experience has been very promising with very rare complications related to robotic device failure. Recently, several reports have documented the technical feasibility of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) with the daVinci Surgical System. Proposed pharyngeal and laryngeal application...

This study aims to investigate the expression and clinical significance of CC chemokine ligand 18 (CCL18) in the serum and tumor tissue of the patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the serum CCL18 contents in 59 patients with OSCC and 17 healthy adults; immunohistochemistry was used to detect the CCL18 expressions in 97 s...

This study compared field-in-field (FIF) radiotherapy with conformal radiotherapy with physical wedges for the treatment of unilateral cervical malignant lymphoma. Two treatment plans, the FIF technique and conformal RT, were generated for each of 32 patients with unilateral cervical malignant lymphoma. To compare the 2 treatment plans, dose-volume histograms of the planning target volume (PTV)...

The notion that the mucosal immune system maintains a tolerogenic response to harmless Ags while continually being challenged with microbial products seems an enigma. The aim of this study was to unravel mechanisms that are involved in regulating the development of tolerance under constant microbial pressure. The tolerogenic response to Ags administered via the nasal mucosa is dependent on the ...

An adequate reproducibility in the description of tissue architecture is still a challenge to diagnostic pathology, sometimes with unfortunate prognostic implications. To assess a possible diagnostic and prognostic value of quantitiative tissue architecture analysis, structural features based on the Voronoi Diagram (VD) and its subgraphs were developed and tested. A series of 27 structural feat...

BACKGROUND Cervical dilation using mechanical dilators is associated with various complications, such as uterine perforation, cervical laceration, infections and intraperitoneal hemorrhage. To achieve safe and painless cervical dilation, we constructed a new medical device to achieve confident mechanical cervical dilation: a continuous controllable balloon dilator (CCBD). METHODS Controlled p...
