OBJECTIVES Radiological cervical spine involvement in JIA has already been assessed with a large range of prevalence (5-80%), but most studies were performed a long time ago, in symptomatic JIA and without differentiating subsets of JIA. We set out to describe structural cervical spine involvement in young adults with polyarticular JIA (pJIA) regardless of the cervical symptoms and to compare l...
BACKGROUND One of the important issues in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with trauma to the cervical spine is the stability of injured segment of vertebral column. This study was performed to compare the success rate and capacities of nonsurgical (halo cast) versus surgical management of lower cervical spine injuries. METHODS Forty patients admitted to hospitals affiliated to Shiraz ...
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease affecting a significant percentage of the population. The cervical spine is often affected in this disease and can present in the form of atlantoaxial instability (AAI), cranial settling (CS), or subaxial subluxation (SAS). Patients may present with symptoms and disability secondary to these entities but may also be neurologic...
Six patients, aged between 3 and 51 years, with tuberculosis of the upper cervical spine were studied. Prominent features of the disease included pain and stiffness, paralysis, swelling of the retropharyngeal soft tissue, osteolytic erosions, and atlanto-axial subluxation. Cure was obtained with antibiotics, transoral decompression and C1-2 fusion.
BACKGROUND This paper describes MRI findings of upper cervical subluxation due to alar ligament disruption following a vehicular collision. Incidental findings included the presence of a myodural bridge and a spinal cord syrinx. Chiropractic management of the patient is discussed. CASE PRESENTATION A 21-year old female presented with complaints of acute, debilitating upper neck pain with unre...
Introduction: The upper cervical spine includes the atlas (C1) and Axis (C2). anatomy of twovertebrae is unique from each other. Atlanto-axial articulation most unique, mobile segment spine, which largely depends on ligamentous supports based integrity odontoid for its stability. Historically,atlanto-axial subluxation was treated by reduction fusion C1-C2 joint. However, High riding vertebralart...
Anaesthesia in patients with an unstable atlanto-axial joint is fraught with hazards.' Manipulation of the neck during intubation may lead to considerable subluxation in both flexion and extension movements, with pressure from the vertebral body and the odontoid peg. This can significantly reduce the sagittal diameter of the cervical cord, with the possibility of transient or even permanent neu...
Determination of changes in the cervical spine of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is important. Although they are often clinically asymptomatic, during exercise therapy complications, or even death, may occur. The aim of the study was to determine the factors which indicate changes in the cervical spine and atlantoaxial joint (AA) in patients with RA, as well as the association between ...
Atlanto-axial and lower cervical subluxations are frequently present in rhematoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Vertebral erosions, particularly of the odontoid process, can often be demonstrated. Rheumatoid involvement of the occipito-atlanto-axial joints may cause a vertical translation of the cervical spine with respect to the skull; at times, this is associated with true basilar inv...
