The CYC7-1 mutation in the yeast Saccharomyces cereuisiae causes the production of approximately 30 times the normal amount of iso-2-cytochrome c. Genetic analysis established that the CYC7-I mutation is a reciprocal translocation involving the left arm of chromosome V and the right arm of chromosome XVZ. The chromosome V arm was broken adjacent to the gene CYC7, which determines the primary st...

We report two sibs with unbalanced translocations between chromosomes 2 and 11, both products of a paternal balanced reciprocal translocation involving bands 2q37.3 and 11q23.3

Alternate-1 and alternate-2 orientation of chromosomes, as well as the two types of adjacent orientation, were observed cytologically in the ring configurations of three reciprocal translocation heterozygotes of Gossypium hirsutum L. The observations indicate that the two types of alternate orientation should be characteristic of ring-forming translocations.

Transcription is obviously essential, but even a good thing can be dangerous at times. In this issue, Lin et al. (2009) provide evidence that binding of the transcription machinery may predispose genome regions to breakage and translocations that may lead to cancer.

Although small populations are at high risk of extinction, there are regular reports in the scientific literature of purported small, isolated, persistent populations. One source of evidence of the viability of small populations comes from the alleged successful introduction of species to areas outside their original range from introductions of few individuals. We reviewed the examples from int...

Recent work has shown that the resistive force arising from viscous effects within the pore region could explain observed translocation times in certain experiments involving voltage-driven translocations of DNA through nanopores [Ghosal, Phys. Rev. E 71, 051904 (2006); Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 238104 (2007)]. The electrokinetic flow inside the pore and the accompanying viscous effects also play a ...

The meiotic behaviour of two male human reciprocal translocations is described. One patient had an unbalanced son and a chain configuration. The second had a stillborn child and a ring corresponding to an adjacent I segregation. The meiotic behaviour of chromosomal rearrangements must be investigated for proper genetic counselling.

Views of how homologous recombination is initiated have changed over the past several decades: in the 1960s and 1970s, single-strand DNA lesions (nicks) were the leading contenders, but in the last decade, double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs) have reigned. In this issue of Cell, evidence is presented that nicks can stimulate homologous recombination and, in uncontrolled situations, may lead to trans...
