Twenty-eight isolates of Enterobacteriaceae were obtained from inpatients and outpatients with significant urinary tract infections. The effect of co-trimoxazole or its separate components was then determined upon shake cultures of these organisms in urine obtained from healthy subjects. Co-trimoxazole did not have a significant bactericidal effect upon any of the organisms. Trimethoprim alone ...

Background and Aim: In the last few decades co-trimoxazole, an antibacterial combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, has been used for treatment of bacterial infections, but due to the vast usage of these drugs, resistant strains have appeared throughout the world. One of the reasons for resistance to co-trimoxazole is related to drf genes, which are responsible for trimethoprim resis...

BACKGROUND There are few data on tuberculosis (TB) incidence in HIV-infected children on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Observational studies suggest co-trimoxazole prophylaxis may prevent TB, but there are no randomized data supporting this. The ARROW trial, which enrolled HIV-infected children initiating ART in Uganda and Zimbabwe and included randomized cessation of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis...

Co-trimoxazole was found to have a predominantly bacteriostatic effect upon 28 urinary isolates of Enterobacteriaceae in nutrient broth and was never bactericidal in artificially infected urine. The components of co-trimoxazole were tested individually and trimethoprim was found to be at least as effective as co-trimoxazole in nutrient broth and in urine. Trimethoprim alone produced some bacter...

The efficacy of co-trimoxazole for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum parasitaemia in children younger than 5 years of age was evaluated in Malawi. 46 children with P falciparum parasitaemia, 37% of whom also met clinical criteria for a diagnosis of acute lower respiratory tract infection, were treated with 20 mg/kg co-trimoxazole twice daily for five days. Parasitaemia (mean clearance time...

A 4 year old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia developed a pure red cell aplasia 13 months after entering remission and while on maintenance chemotherapy. Co-trimoxazole was also being administered for prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii infection. When co-trimoxazole was stopped the red cell aplasia resolved.
