The geometry imposed by the coordination sphere around the metal, together with the choice of the "arms" can be advantageously used to build corannulene-based molecular tweezers, which show great affinities for C60 and C70, as revealed by NMR titration experiments, mass spectroscopy, DFT calculations and the single crystal X-ray structural analysis of the compound C60 ⊂1.

The catalytic effect of graphene on the corannulene bowl-to-bowl inversion is confirmed in this paper using a pair-wise dispersion interaction model. In particular, continuum approach together with Lennard-Jones...

The supramolecular dimerization of tetraanionic corannulene is utilized as a self-assembly motif for the construction of highly charged, buckybowl-based supramolecular oligomers. Oligomers of up to 7 units (3900 g mol(-1)) of reduced dicorannulenic monomers are identified and characterized by various NMR techniques, and the reversibility of their assembly is established through the concentratio...

A series of buckybowls with different sizes and structures have been tested as potential receptors of fullerenes C60, C70 and C40. Among these bowls are corannulene (C20H10), sumanene (C21H12), pinakene (C28H14), hemifullerene (C30H12), circumtrindene (C36H12), pentaindenocorannulene (C50H20) and bowl-shaped hexabenzocoronene derivatives. An exhaustive study, taking into account different orien...

The specific π-π interactions between curved and planar structures, which are different from the general π-π interactions between planar arenes, have generated great attention due to their brand-new, unique, and fascinating photoelectric properties. Herein, the curved-planar (C-P) π-π interactions between corannulene, pyrene and coronene have been investigated using the DFT-D method. A series o...

Curved corannulene (Cor) can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a controlled manner due to the large dipole moment. However, the poor aqueous solubility of Cor necessitates the employment of solubilization vehicles. This work revealed that PEGylation was less efficient than the cyclodextrin complexation regarding ROS production.

Bowl-shaped corannulene provides various metal binding modes with its curved π-surfaces and rim. Herein, we report the syntheses of 2-pyridylcorannulene and its cyclopalladated complex. Its expanded π-system and columnar self-assembly in the crystal state were revealed by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, ESI-TOF mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

The ion size matters: the structures of corannulene monoanions crystallized with Cs(+) and Rb(+) ions in the presence of [18]crown-6 reveal the intrinsic binding preferences of alkali metals and allow evaluation of the bowl deformation caused by negative charge distribution and metal binding. The large cesium cation coordinates exclusively to the concave face of C(20) H(10)(-), whereas the smal...
