[1] The clustering of earthquakes in time on the same fault affects the rate and pattern of interseismic deformation. We develop a simple analytic viscoelastic model of the surface velocity field through a clustered earthquake cycle by superposing the velocities of individual earthquake cycles of constant period but varying phase. Velocity profiles prior to and after an earthquake show a wider ...

This paper explores two practical issues related to the force control of manipulators. The first issue examined is how system stability is effected by commonly occurring manipulator nonlinearities, such as sampled-data, control signal saturation and slip-stick friction. It is shown that discretely implemented force control algorithms can drive the feedback force controlled manipulator into a li...

Over the last years precise point positioning (PPP) has been receiving more attention as it provides a cheaper way to achieve decimetre and centimetre precision levels when compared to the typical differential techniques. While differential techniques rely on two or more receivers to differentiate their observations and cancel out most errors, PPP only uses undifferenced observations from a sin...

On 1 April 2007 a great, tsunamigenic earthquake (moment magnitude 8.1) ruptured the Solomon Islands subduction zone at the triple junction where the Australia and Solomon Sea-Woodlark Basin plates simultaneously underthrust the Pacific plate with different slip directions. The associated abrupt change in slip direction during the great earthquake drove convergent anelastic deformation of the u...

In this contribution we study the strength of the single-receiver, single-channel GNSS model for instantaneously resolving integer cycle-slips. This will be done for multi-frequency GPS, Galileo and BeiDou, thereby focusing on the challenging case that the slip is due to a simultaneous loss of lock on all frequencies. The analytical analysis presented is supported by means of numerical results.

The theory and application of statistical quality control is well established in surveying and geodesy. In recent years it is also gaining momentum in applications of marine positioning. The set of quality control recommendations of the United Kingdom Offshore Operators’ Association (UKOOA) is a good example in this respect. Quality control is made up of various contributing factors, one of whi...

This paper explores the effect of initial conditions on the behavior of coupled frictional elastic systems subject to periodic loading. Previously, it has been conjectured that the long term response will be independent of initial conditions if all nodes slip at least once during each loading cycle. Here, this conjecture is disproved in the context of a simple two-node system. Counter examples ...
