Peritoneal dialysis is a form of kidney dialysis that is used to remove accumulated metabolic waste products and water in patients with end stage kidney disease. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of glucose and its by-products, both found in peritoneal dialysis fluid, has been implicated in contributing to peritoneal damage over time, in turn limiting long-term use of the technique. New...

Peritoneal dialysis can be considered a "wearable" dialysis therapy. However, patients typically require 3 or 4 daily exchanges, each taking 20-40 minutes and potentially increasing the risk of infection by repeated disconnection and reconnection. Although peritoneal dialysis cyclers allow patients to be "free" from their machine for 13-15 hours, they similarly need a supply of fresh dialysate....

The pharmacokinetics of cefotiam (CTM) was investigated in 7 patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). One gram of CTM was infused either intravenously (i.v. group) or intraperitoneally (i.p. group). In the i.v. group, the serum concentration of CTM at 6 hours after infusion was 25.9 mg/L and the half-life value was 5.09 hours, while the peak value of CTM in dialysat...

226 peritoneal dialyses were performed on 100 patients. 28 patients presented with acute renal failure. Uraemia was the most frequent indication for dialysis. Peritonitis was an important complication and Acinetobacter species accounted for 51.5% of the positive cultures. Other complications included poor dialysate drainage and hypokalemia. Mortality was mainly due to causes unrelated to perito...

RATIONALE Achromobacter xylosoxidans infection is mostly reported in immunocompromised patients. Until now, it is still rarely reported in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. PATIENT CONCERNS This is the 1st case of A xylosoxidans infection due to tunnel infection of a Tenckhoff catheter. DIAGNOSIS The diagnosis was confirmed by the report of culture. INTERVENTIONS Risk factors for t...

We have directly observed the structural evolution of colloidal crystals as a function of increasing ionic strength using confocal scanning laser microscopy. Silica colloids were sedimented onto a glass substrate in deionized water to create large, single domain crystals. The solution ionic strength was then increased by one of three methods of controlled electrolyte addition: (1) direct inject...

The aim of this study was to investigate peritoneal dialysis catheter malposition following low-position modified peritoneal dialysis catheterization and its clinical application value. A total of 48 patients receiving traditional peritoneal dialysis catheterization (the traditional group) and 95 patients receiving right low-position modified peritoneal dialysis catheterization (the modified gr...

The pharmacokinetics of amikacin were investigated in five stable patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Each patient was studied after the administration of 7.5 mg of amikacin per kg by both the intravenous (i.v.) and intraperitoneal (i.p.) route, allowing a 1-month washout period between doses. No differences in amikacin half-life, volume of distribution, total ...

This study compared the ability of telavancin to the ability of cefazolin and vancomycin to eliminate staphylococci from peritoneal dialysis fluid by using a static in vitro model to simulate the conditions of peritoneal dialysis. The results showed that telavancin exhibited statistically significantly better kill (P < 0.05) against both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphyl...

Four cases of peritonitis caused by the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces variotii in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are reported. Removal of the Tenckhoff catheter and antifungal chemotherapy led to resolution of symptoms in all cases. Possible contaminating events are discussed, and reported infections with P. variotii are reviewed.
