A lab-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor was operated at 20°C with low strength wastewater (0.6-0.8 g COD/L) for over 200 days. Reactor was inoculated with mesophilic granular sludge. The up-flow velocity was set to 5 m/h by effluent recirculation. The COD loading was increased up to 12 kg COD/m3/day until the day 76, resulting in hydraulic retention time of 1.5 hours. Physical p...

Abstract A molecular approach was used to evaluate the microbial diversity of bacteria and archaea in two expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors fed with increasing oleic acid loading rates up to 8 kg of chemical oxygen demand (COD) m(-3) day(-1) as the sole carbon source. One of the reactors was inoculated with granular sludge (RI) and the other with suspended sludge (RII). During operat...

In the full-scale the anaerobic co-digestion of brewery yeast using granular biomass was studied. Full-scale operation with 0.7 % yeast concentration showed a 38.5 % increase in the biogas production and a 26.2 % increase in the organic loading rate, which resulted in an increase of the biomethane/natural-gas substitute ratio from 10 % to 16 %.

Image analysis techniques were developed and applied to quantify the process of anaerobic granulation in an expanded granular sludge blanket reactor (EGSB) fed with a synthetic substrate based on glucose [60-30% COD (chemical oxygen demand)] and volatile fatty acids (40-70% COD) over 376 days. In a first operation period that lasted 177 days, the aggregation of dispersed sludge was quantitative...

Image analysis techniques are applied to monitor the morphological changes in granular sludge present in an expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactor fed with oleic acid. Deterioration of granular sludge was monitored along the trial period by measuring the percentage of aggregates smaller than 1 mm (in terms of Feret diameter) either in terms of projected area or in terms of number of ag...

Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to datasets gathering morphological, physiological and reactor performance information, from three toxic shock loads (SL1 - 1.6 mg(detergent)/L; SL2 - 3.1mg(detergent)/L; SL3 - 40 mg(solvent)/L) applied in an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor. The PCA allowed the visualization of the main effects caused by the toxics, by clustering the sa...

Two shock loads of a commercial detergent (I-150 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L, fed for 56 h; II-300 mg COD/L fed for 222 h) were applied in a lab-scale Expanded Granular Sludge Blanket (EGSB) reactor, fed with 1,500 mg COD/L of ethanol. The impact of the surfactant was assessed in terms of granular sludge morphology, specific methanogenic activity (SMA) in the presence of individual substr...

In the present study, two granular systems were compared in terms of hydrogen production rate, stability and bacterial diversity under extreme thermophilic conditions (70 degrees C). Two EGSB reactors were individually inoculated with heat treated methanogenic granules (HTG) and HTG amended with enrichment culture with high capacity of hydrogen production (engineered heat treated methanogenic g...
