Esophageal foreign body (EFB) ingestion is of ubiquitous occurrence in pediatric population. Diagnosis and precise localization of non-radio opaque FB poses considerable challenge. Delayed presentation, poor history, and inconclusive esophagoscopic findings often lead to diagnostic delay. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) could be a great option in these situations. We present a case of ...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the methods of diagnosis of fish bone foreign body in the esophagus and suggest a diagnostic protocol. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study. METHODS A prospective study was performed on 286 patients with a history of fish bone foreign body impaction. Among them, 88 patients had negative findings in the oral cavity and laryngopharynx. Subsequent radiologic assessmen...
The presence of an esophageal foreign body (EFB) is a medical emergency requiring urgent evaluation and treatment. Swallowing of foreign bodies is most common in children aged between 6 months and 6 years, in whom it usually occurs during games. In adults, foreign bodies tend to be ingested accidentally together with food. The authors report an unusual case of EFB (a table fork) in an adult and...

Introduction. Foreign body impaction (FBI) in the esophagus can be a serious condition, which can have a high mortality among children and adults, if appropriate diagnosis and treatment are not instituted urgently. 80-90% of all foreign bodies trapped in the esophagus usually pass spontaneously through the digestive tract, without any medical or surgical intervention. 10-20% of them will need a...
A 51-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with hematemesis after swallowing a chicken bone. An endoscopy was performed, which showed a large submucosal hematoma in the esophagus, which extended from 15cm down to the esophagogastric junction. The esophageal lumen was occupied by the hematoma. No active bleeding or foreign body was seen (●" Fig.1;●" Video 1). The findings on examination and ...
We report a two year old child who developed a large esophageal diverticulum over a period of ten months following ingestion of a multispiked leaf of Quercus semicarpipholia. Though the endoscopic removal of foreign body was successful, it did not relieve the symptoms and patient required surgical resection of the diverticulum. Patient is asymptomatic after 4 months of follow up.
An impacted esophageal foreign body is most often an urgent, rather than a life-threatening, medical situation. Pharmacologic or mechanical methods can be used to relieve the impaction, depending on the patient, as well as the location and physical properties of the foreign body. Flexible fiberoptic esophagoscopy is the accepted standard of care for removal of an object that is not smooth, radi...
All medical records of dogs with an esophageal foreign body treated at the Small Animal Hospital, University of Bern between January 1992 and December 1997 were reviewed. The retrospective data obtained included signalment (sex, age, breed), history, clinical findings, thoracic radiographic diagnosis, localization and type of foreign body, treatment, esophageal reevaluation and outcome. Macrosc...
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the benefit of routine postoperative chest radiography after removal of esophageal foreign bodies in children. METHODS Medical records were reviewed of all patients evaluated with an esophageal foreign body at a single children's hospital over 10 years. Operative records and imaging reports were reviewed for evidence of esophageal injury. RE...
