purpose: to evaluate the incidence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (xfs) in patients with senile cataract who were scheduled for phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation (pe + iol) and to compare the outcomes of pe+iol between eyes with and without xfs. method: we retrospectively reviewed 2200 eyes with cataract undergoing pe + iol. all procedures were performed by a single surgeon (...

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and other genomic technologies have accelerated the discovery of genes and genomic regions contributing to common human ocular disorders with complex inheritance. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma and myopia account for the majority of visual impairment worldwide. Over 19 genes and/or genomic regions have been asso...

Objective: To evaluate the neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet (PLR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) in exfoliative glaucoma (XFG) patients with aim of comparing findings those healthy controls syndrome (XFS) patients.
Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study included 134 participants, 22 XFG patients, 41 XFS 71 individuals were examined. Peripheral ven...

BACKGROUND/AIMS The exact pathogenesis of glaucoma in exfoliation syndrome is unclear. There has been some suggestion that narrow angles are more common in exfoliation syndrome and that this may be a component in the disease. The degree of pigmentation has also been shown to influence the intraocular pressure. The aim was to determine whether gonioscopic features of the anterior chamber angle i...

Aim. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of exfoliation syndrome in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey and to evaluate its relationship with cardiovascular and ocular diseases. Methods. Patients over the age of 45 years who presented to the clinic were included in the study. All cases underwent a comprehensive ophthalmology examination. Exfoliation syndrome was diagnosed w...

PURPOSE The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs1048661, rs3825942, and rs2165241 within the LOXL1 gene were recently found to confer risk of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG) through pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) in Caucasians. The purpose of this study was to test this association in Japanese subjects with XFS/XFG. METHODS Japanese subjects with clinically diagnosed XFS/XFG and norma...

PURPOSE Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the lysyl oxidase like-1 gene (LOXL1; rs1048661 and rs3825942) were found to confer risk to pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG) through the pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) in Nordic, Caucasian, and two Asiatic populations (Indian and Japanese). The prevalence (0.2%-0.7%) of XFS in the Chinese is considerably lower compared to Nordic population...

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate association profiles of lysyl oxidase-like 1 (LOXL1) gene polymorphisms with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) in a Korean population. METHODS A total of 110 Korean patients with XFS and 127 control subjects were included in this study. Genotypes of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of LOXL1 (rs1048661, rs3825942, and rs2165241) were...

At present, no animal models fully embody exfoliation syndrome or exfoliation glaucoma. Both genetic and environmental factors appear critical for disease manifestation, and both must be considered when generating animal models. Because mice provide a powerful mammalian platform for modeling complex disease, this paper focuses on mouse models of exfoliation syndrome and exfoliation glaucoma.
