The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) was formed in 1989 as a group of centers that were actively using extracorporeal life support (ECLS) the management cardiopulmonary failure. Among functions ELSO are enhancing communication, developing guidelines for ECLS, and maintaining registry ECLS cases. In 2021, had 543 domestic international who report data to registry.[1]

We describe a case of a patient assisted by extracorporeal life support, in which we obtained the dynamic filling index, a measure for venous volume during extracorporeal life support, and used this index to assess cardiac load-responsiveness during acute reloading. While reloading, the obtained findings on cardiac pump function by the dynamic filling index were supported by trans-esophageal ec...

The influenza H1N1 epidemics in 2009 led a substantial number of people to develop severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and refractory hypoxemia. In these patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was used as rescue oxygenation therapy. Several randomized clinical trials and observational studies suggested that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation associated with protective mechanical ...

W ITH THE INTRODUCTION of intensive care units in the 1960s an environment was established for aggressive patient care. Current technologic achievements continue to improve the means by which this care is provided. Hemodialysis, ventilators, parenteral nutrition, and ventricular assist devices all offer temporary, or occasionally permanent, support for failing organ systems. Extracorporeal circ...

I read with great interest the article by Hermon and coworkers [1], who reported that surfactant application in children with severe respiratory failure treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was associated with improved lung volume and pulmonary mechanics. Although these findings must be confirmed in prospective studies, they are very promising. Based on a series of animal studies, m...

Legionella pneumophila is responsible for hospital or community-acquired pneumonia. Neonatal legionellosis is associated with rapidly severe clinical course and high mortality rates. We describe a case of hospital-acquired Legionella pneumonia in a newborn with undiagnosed tracheoesophageal fistula and acute respiratory failure requiring venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support be...

Status asthmaticus is a life-threatening form of reactive airway disease, refractory to initial control with ordinary medical measures, sometimes requiring mechanical ventilatory assistance. In this report, we describe a patient whose bronchospasm could not be controlled with conventional measures, with severe respiratory acidosis (PaCO2 consistently > 100 mm Hg), who was successfully supported...
