The interest of microelectronic fluidic arrays for biomedical applications, like DNA determination, is rapidly increasing. In order to evaluate these systems in terms of required Design-for-Test structures, fault simulations in both fluidic and electronic domains are necessary. VHDL-AMS can be used successfully in this case. This paper shows a highly testable architecture of a DNA Bio-Sensing a...

We present and demonstrate a novel fabrication method to integrate metallic nanostructures into fluidic systems, using nanoimprint lithography and lift-off on a compositional resist stack, which consists of multi-layers of SiO(2) and polymer patterned from different fabrication steps. The lift-off of the stack allows the final nano-features precisely aligned in the proper locations inside fluid...

The feasibility of using a stand alone Fluidic Thrust-Vectoring (FTV) system for the purpose of longitudinal trim of an unmanned aerial vehicle is the focus of the research presented in this paper. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires high pressure secondary air to deflect the engine exhaust gases, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable sec...

Fluidic optics is a new class of optical system with real-time tunability and reconfigurability enabled by the introduction of fluidic components into the optical path. We describe the design, fabrication, operation of a number of fluidic optical systems, and focus on three devices – liquidcore/liquid-cladding (L) waveguides, microfluidic dye lasers, and diffraction gratings based on flowing, c...

The linear control of a parametrically excited impacting flexible link in rotational motion is considered. The equation of motion for such a system contains time-periodic coefficients. To suppress the vibrations resulting after impact with an external rigid body, a linear controller is designed via Lyapunov-Floquet transformation. In this approach, the equations of motion with time-periodic coef...

In this paper an observer-controller structure for attitude synchronization of a satellite formation is presented. The design applies methods from mechanical synchronization to design a nonlinear observer and controller for satellites actuated by means of reaction wheels and magnetic torquers. In this approach one satellite is defined as the leader of the formation, while the rest are defined a...

This work focuses on studying the effect of the flow conditions and the geometric variation of the microcantilever s supporting system on the microcantilever detection capabilities within a fluidic cell for various pertinent parameters. Such parameters include Reynolds number, height of the fluidic cell, surface reaction constant, and the Schmidt number. The results of this investigation show t...

Balancing and reacting to strong and unexpected pushes is a critical requirement for humanoid robots. We recently designed a capture point based approach which interfaces with a momentum-based torque controller and we implemented and validated it on the iCub humanoid robot. In this work we implement a Receding Horizon control, also known as Model Predictive Control, to add the possibility to pr...

This paper presents a portable, assistive, soft robotic glove designed to augment hand rehabilitation for individuals with functional grasp pathologies. The robotic glove utilizes soft actuators consisting of molded elastomeric chambers with fiber reinforcements that induce specific bending, twisting and extending trajectories under fluid pressurization. These soft actuators were mechanically p...

In this paper we extend the matching technique to a class of nonholonomic systems with symmetries. Assuming that the momentum equation defines an integrable distribution, we introduce a family of reduced systems. The method of controlled Lagrangians is then applied to these systems resulting in a smooth stabilizing controller.
