the purpose of this study was to examine the acute and sub-acute effects of diazinon onhistopathological parameters of liver tissue and blood level of hepatic enzymes of male commonfrog (rana ridibunda). frogs were assigned to 9 groups (n=8, meaning 8 frogs in each group):control and treatment groups with 30, 60, 90 and 120 μg/l diazinon in water for one day or oneweek. hepatic enzymes containi...
Much of Bob Boutilier's research characterised the subcellular, organ-level and in vivo behavioural responses of frogs to environmental hypoxia. His entirely integrative approach helped to reveal the diversity of tissue-level responses to O(2) lack and to advance our understanding of the ecological relevance of hypoxia tolerance in frogs. Work from Bob's lab mainly focused on the role for skele...
In 222 Rana pipiens frogs and 34 tadpoles captured in and near Minnesota, Aeromonas hydrophila and 29 species of Enterobacteriaceae, including yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella arizonae, were isolated from intestines. The prevalence of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae was lowest in frogs captured in early spring and highest in frogs captured in late summer.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced commensurate with aerobic metabolic rate, contribute to muscle disuse atrophy (MDA) in immobilised animals by damaging myoskeletal protein and lipids. Aestivating frogs appear to avoid MDA in part by substantially suppressing metabolic rate. However, as ectotherms, metabolic rate is sensitive to environmental temperature, and the high ambient temperatures...
Twenty-two mink frogs, Rana septentrionalis, collected from two locations in Minnesota, United States, were examined for helminth and protozoan blood parasites in July 1999. A total of 16 parasite taxa were recovered including 5 larval digenean trematodes, 7 adult digenean trematodes, 3 nematodes, and 1 Trypanosoma species. Infracommunities were dominated by the digeneans in terms of richness a...
The vast majority of embryological research on amphibians focuses on just a single genus of frogs, Xenopus. To attain a more comprehensive understanding of amphibian development, experimentation on non-model frogs will be essential. Here, we report on the early development, rearing, and embryological analysis of túngara frogs (genus Engystomops, also called Physalaemus). The frogs Engystomops p...
To minimize the negative effects of an infection on fitness, hosts can respond adaptively by altering their reproductive effort or by adjusting their timing of reproduction. We studied effects of the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis on the probability of calling in a stream-breeding rainforest frog (Litoria rheocola). In uninfected frogs, calling probability was relatively const...
1. Haematological and respiratory parameters (including RBC count, CO2 content and percentage oxygen saturation) were studied in coldacclimated (12 ± 1 °C) and normal frogs (23 + 2 °C). 2. Seasonal variation in RBC count was found, the count being higher in January than in September. Females showed higher counts than males. Coldacclimation resulted in the elevation of counts in all seasons and ...
When it comes to pesticides’ effects on frogs, sublethal concentrations do not preclude lethality. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the October issue of the journal Ecological Applications. After dosing wood frogs and leopard frogs with very small concentrations of the popular pesticide malathion, the researchers discovered that the chemical did not kill the frogs directly—inst...
