The top quark mass is currently measured to δm exp,Tevatron t = 2.9 GeV and will be measured at the LHC to a precision of δm exp,LHC t ≈ 1–2 GeV. We show that even this impressive precision will not be sufficient for many future physics applications. These include electroweak precision observables, Higgs physics in extensions of the Standard Model as well as cold dark matter predictions in Supe...

The extraordinary sensitivity of the mammalian ear is commonly attributed to the cochlear amplifier, a cellular process thought to locally boost responses of the cochlear partition to soft sounds. However, cochlear power gain has not been measured directly. Here we use a scanning laser interferometer to determine the volume displacement and volume velocity of the cochlear partition by measuring...

It was shown by numerous authors that the characterization of RFID (radio-frequency identification) transponder antennas that are favored to be small, have low gain, and show a strongly reactive input impedance, is far from trivial. We propose a method that utilizes a small, highly-stable, battery-driven signal source to generate the transmit signal directly at the antenna. The signal source is...

Distributed measurements of the Brillouin gain spectrum in a photonic crystal fibre have been carried out for the first time to our knowledge. These measurements confirm the strong increase of the Brillouin threshold as resulting from the broadband and multimode nature of the Brillouin gain spectrum all along the fibre. INTRODUCTION The periodic wavelength-scale air-hole microstructure of solid...

A case of contaminated functional gain measures from internal hearing aid noise is presented and clinical implications addressed. The contaminated functional gain measures underestimated real ear insertion gain. Recognition of this source of functional gain measurement error is essential for accurate hearing aid fitting.

In this paper, a SIW horn antenna is designed using Luneburg lens in order to enhance the gain. Using a transition printed on the same substrate, both the matching performance and the front to back ratio was improved. In addition, this transition structure allows the antenna to be planar. The proposed antenna operates at 14.5 GHz and can be used for Ku band application. An antenna prototype was ...
