The present investigation is based on the idea of intensifying the gas-solids contact in a circulating fluidized bed by introducing obstacles into it. Such obstacles may effectively suppress radial inhomogeneities in the solids flux and concentration, increase the dynamic solids hold-up, and break up solids clusters. This article (Part I) deals with the hydrodynamics (pressure drop and solids h...

The hydrodynamics of a dispersed air-water system within a spouted column with a concentric draft tube and a conical base is simulated using CFD based on a two–fluid Euler–Euler (E-E) modeling framework and k-ε two-equation turbulence closures. The interaction between the dispersed gas phase and the continuous liquid phase is characterized by bubble–liquid interphase forces (drag, turbulent dis...

A new clockfeedthrough compensation scheme for switchedcurrent systems is proposed. The circuit cancels both the signal dependent and the constant clockfeedthrough term. It is shown that this concept can be used to derive various sample-and-hold circuits, depending on the desired clock frequency, accuracy, and power dissipation.

In 1948, W. Hoeffding introduced a large class of unbiased estimators called U -statistics, defined as the average value of a real-valued m-variate function h calculated at all possible sets of m points from a random sample. In the present paper, we investigate the corresponding robust analogue which we call U -quantile-statistics. We are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the sample p-q...

Standard model top pair production produces a characteristic spin correlation which can be modified by new production mechanisms such as Z ′ bosons or Kaluza-Klein gluons. In the standard model, top quarks decay weakly before any hadronization processes take effect, enabling top spin information to be transmitted to the top quark decay products. We report on the observation and measurement of t...

The first ever human vs. computer no-limit Texas hold ’em competition took place from April 24– May 8, 2015 at River’s Casino in Pittsburgh, PA. In this article I present my thoughts on the competition design, agent architecture, and lessons learned.

TO THE EDITOR: Schipke and Tetzlaff (5) suggest breath-hold diving may recruit intrapulmonary arteriovenous anastomoses (IPAVA), providing a pathway for venous gas emboli to become arterialized leading to transient neurological injury consistent with transient ischemic attacks. To be a valid hypothesis there must be evidence of microbubbles in the right ventricle, left ventricle, carotid, or ce...
