BACKGROUND Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastric acid hypersecretion respond well to suppression of gastric acid secretion. However, clinical management and research in diseases of acid secretion have been hindered by the lack of a non-invasive, accurate and reproducible tool to measure gastric acid output (GAO). Thus, symptoms or, in refractory cases, invasive testing may guide ...

detected in ten of the fourteen patients, and BAO and MAO were significantly higher than in controls and comparable with acid output in patients with duodenal ulcer (table). These results suggest that increased gastric acid output could be a feature of absorptive hypercalciuria. If ionisation of dietary calcium is a prerequisite for calcium absorption, gastric acid hypersecretion might help to ...

Aspirin administration to normal subjects resulted in a reduction in gastric prostaglandin E (PGE) output. Both PGE concentration and gastric juice volume were decreased. Gastric acid output also decreased, although the difference was not statistically significant. An increased sensitivity of the PGE system to inhibition by aspirin at 11 p.m., midnight, and 1am was observed.

The gastric acid, pepsin, and secretory volume output in response to a mixed meal were measured in six patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome caused by a gastrin-producing tumour proved subsequently at surgery. The patients were all normocalcaemic, and none had previous abdominal surgery. In four of the six patients, ingestion of the meal markedly inhibited the gastric secretory output, which...

The quantity of histamine entering gastric juice has been followed during standard intramuscular pentagastrin tests in 10 patients (six duodenal ulcer, one gastric ulcer and three nonulcer dyspepsia), and during standard insulin tests in three (all duodenal ulcer). Following pentagastrin, peak histamine output occurred from 0-15 min in six patients and from 15-30 min in two. Acid output peaks f...

Zinc, magnesium, aluminum and copper complexes of several potent, clinically used carbonic anhydrase (CA) sulfonamide inhibitors, such as acetazolamide, methazolamide, ethoxzolamide and benzolamide were tested for their possible applications as antacids, in experimental animals. Gastric acid secretion parameters 3 days after treatment with these CA inhibitors (2 x 500 mg, twice a day), in dogs ...

We have previously demonstrated that intracisternal orexin-A potently stimulated gastric acid secretion through the vagus nerve. Considering its stimulatory action on feeding, we hypothesized that orexin-A is a candidate mediator of cephalic phase gastric secretion. It has also been suggested that the stimulation of acid by central orexin-A may be mediated by orexin 1 receptor (OX1R) in the bra...

The effect of varying doses of ethanol extract of Aloe vera (Liliaceae) on acute gastric mucosal lesions induced by 0.6 M HCl and acid output was studied in the pylorus ligated and lumen perfuse rats, respectively. Acid secretion was determined by titration of the collected gastric juice to pH 7.0. Intraperitoneal injection of Aloe vera, dose dependently inhibited gastric acid secretion. The pl...

1. Maximal acid output after pentagastrin stimulation, and fasting and postprandial serum gastrin concentrations were determined in 25 normal subjects, 30 patients with corpus gastric ulcers, 10 patients with prepyloric ulcers and 30 patients with both duodenal and gastric ulcers. 2. Corpus ulcers and prepyloric ulcers formed one distinct group. Maximal acid output was abnormally low in the cor...

Patients with duodenal ulcer disease received either a two hour pentagastrin infusion test or a similar test with the addition of a bolus of cimetidine, 200 mg, after one hour of pentagastrin. Pentagastrin induced secretion of acid and histamine, the secretion patterns of the two being similar. Total histamine output in the gastric aspirate in the first hour of pentagastrin infusion was related...
