The Peters family is a Yale family, and Jack Peters' branch of the family extended to five generations at Yale when my third daughter, Barbara, received her M.D. degree, with honors, in 1979. We trace our origins back to when Andrew Peters came to America from England in 1702 and settled in Andover, Massachusetts. Our family's Yale connection goes back to Jack's grandfather, Thomas McClure Pete...
this article studies sir walter scott’s use of the family-as-nation trope in ivanhoe and anne of geierstein. the importance of this trope in his figuration of nationhood is discerned by carrying out a close reading of the texts and placing them in their historical context, which primarily consists of a comparison with edmund burke and maria edgeworth. consequently, his position is revealed as b...
Label-free detection of the interaction between hexahistidine-tagged human κ-opioid receptor membrane protein and anti-His antibody is demonstrated in liquid by an optical microelectromechanical system utilizing electromagnetically actuated microresonators. Shift in resonance frequency due to accretion of mass on the sensitive surface of microresonators is monitored via an integrated optical re...
We evaluate the ability of hexahistidine (His6) tags on peptide and protein substrates to recruit deoxyribozymes for modifying those substrates. For two different deoxyribozymes, one that creates tyrosine-RNA nucleopeptides and another that phosphorylates tyrosine side chains, we find substantial improvements in yield, kobs, and Km for peptide substrates due to recruiting by His6/Cu(2+). Howeve...
This paper studies the reasons for low levels of child support paid by non-custodial divorced fathers. In divorce, non-custodial father’s necessary child support is typically reduced once the mother remarries, as some financial burden of raising their children shifts from biological father to the step-father. This provides an incentive for the father to encourage mother’s remarriage through the...
We present a molecular theory to study the adsorption of different species within pH-sensitive hydrogel nanofilms. The theoretical framework allows for a molecular-level description of all the components of the system, and it explicitly accounts for the acid-base equilibrium. We concentrate on the adsorption of hexahistidine, one of the most widely used tags in bio-related systems, particularly...
a "State Security Hospital". When first seen, the patient presented a very despondent appearance and gave a history of severe parental deprivation, i.e. his mother died when he was only a few year* old. His father sent him, togetbe with three other siblings, to orphanage where he remained untl the age of 17 or 18. His histof> following this adolescence showed big gap until his marriage at 26 to...
within a stage that reproduces a disrupted natural order: incubators, parenteral feeding, mechanical lactation; technology as a necessary but grotesque surrogate. The father, standing in the halls or undaunted, close to his children, swallows the anguish or escapes from reality in a sort of dignified manner. But fathers, in that barren nowhere awaiting for luck or calamity, is also aware. Many ...
when kafka started to write the metamorphosis as an allegory in 1912, he had a concealed purpose and aim in his mind. he has described his own idea and somehow himself in metamorphosis. in other words, his attitude in metamorphosis is the reflection of himself. gregor samsa, the main character in the story, is a hardworking person who loves his family. he takes no notice of enjoyment in his lif...
