The insecticidal pyrazole ethiprole, applied at rates of 7.5 and 10.0 ppm either alone or in combination treatments with deltamethrin, piperonyl butoxide, and chlorpyrifos-methyl, was evaluated as a protectant of stored wheat and stored corn. The commodities were treated with six treatment combinations, including an untreated control, and held for 6 mo at 22, 27, or 32 degrees C and 57% RH. Bio...
This study aims to develop eco-friendly botanical pesticides. Dried fruits of star anise (Illicium verum Hook.f. (Austrobaileyales: Schisandraceae)) were extracted with methyl alcohol (MA), ethyl acetate (EA), and petroleum ether (PE) at 25°C. The constituents were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the repellency and contact toxicity of the extracts against Sitophilus zeam...
The tetrahydropyramidine hydroxyectoine acts as an osmolyte in a range of bacterial species, but its use as a desiccation protectant is less well explored. Recently, it was demonstrated that hydroxyectoine provides effective stabilisation of the Gram-negative species Pseudomonas putida, which is only relatively poorly preserved by the better-characterised protectant, trehalose. It is now shown ...
Xerosis is a common skin condition, occurring most often in the winter and in low relative humidity, which results in loss of moisture, cracking, and desquamation. Many emollient creams and lotions are available for use as preventive moisturizers. However, few controlled experiments have been published comparing the efficacy of active moisturizing products versus the vehicle used to deliver the...
Abstract Background Botanical pesticides may be a possible solution to the post-harvest loss of stored grains faced by farmers and food processors. In this study, seed preservatives properties Secamone afzelii leaves extracts at 50, 100, 150, 200 µl concentrations were investigated against lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricus) infestation on wheat weight germination capability arra...
Several solvents and analyte protectants were evaluated for their ability to stabilize and maximize the recoveries of a number of organophosphorus pesticide residues during GC/MS analysis. Hexane provided the best analyte stability for a wide range of pesticides, and d-sorbitol offered the most benefit to recovery as an analyte protectant.
