The sensitivity of an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) to environmental stimuli is used to reversibly immobilize a fusion partner, thioredoxin (TRX), onto a hydrophobic surface. An ELP, fused to TRX at its C-terminus, adsorbs onto a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on gold above its inverse phase transition temperature (Tc) and is resolubilized from the surface when the solution tempera...

Synthetic materials in contact with protein containing solution adsorb a considerable amount of proteins. The adsorption behaviour of zinc-free porcine insulin on the hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) surfaces before and after chemical vapour deposition (CVD) modification was directly analysed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time-of-flight-mass spectroscopy in surface ...

The selective adsorption of reagents is often essential for bioarray and lab-on-a-chip type devices. As the starting point for a bioarray, alkyl monolayer terminated silicon shards were photopatterned in a few nanoseconds with thousands of wells (spots) using an optical element, a microlens array. Polyallylamine (PAAm), a primary amine containing polymer, adsorbed with little selectivity to the...

The adsorption of hydrogen on carbon nanotubes and activated carbons has generated considerable interest in relation to hydrogen storage for fuel cells applications[1-3]. However, the widespread use of hydrogen as a fuel is limited by the lack of a convenient and cost-effective method of hydrogen storage. Adsorption of supercritical hydrogen is limited by the low interaction energy between hydr...

The application of hydrophobic polymeric resins as solid-phase adsorbent materials for the recovery and purification of prospective second generation biofuel compounds, including ethanol, iso-propanol, n-propanol, iso-butanol, n-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and n-pentanol, has been investigated. A simple, yet robust correlation has been proposed to model the relative equilib...

Lipoteichoic acids (LTAs) were purified from Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis ATCC 15808 and its LL-H adsorption-resistant mutant, Ads-5, by hydrophobic interaction chromatography. L. delbrueckii phages (LL-H, the LL-H host range mutant, and JCL1032) were inactivated by these poly(glycerophosphate) type of LTAs in vitro in accordance to their adsorption to intact ATCC 15808 and Ads-5 cells.

Dialysis is the single most important therapy for chronic kidney disease. However, protein adsorption onto hemodialysis membranes promotes clot formation. The aim of the present study was to develop a surface-modified membrane which suppresses protein adsorption. Using plasma polymerization, hydrophilic N-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) and acryloyl morpholine (ACMO) were polymerized on hydrophobic poly...

A novel polyamine microsphere, prepared from the water-in-oil emulsion of polyethylenimine, was characterized. The investigation of scanning electron microscopy showed that the polyamine microsphere is a regular ball with a smooth surface. The diameter distribution of the microsphere is 0.37-4.29 μm. The isoelectric point of the microsphere is 10.6. The microsphere can adsorb proteins through t...

A simple method has been developed for the preconcentration of benzene and phenolic compounds (BPC) by the adsorption of its carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The preconcentration of benzene and phenolic compounds (BPC) are ubiquitous pollutants, and many of them are carcinogenic or mutagenic. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a kind of novel and interesting carbon material which can be used for separation an...

The adsorption of a series of cationic lipopeptide surfactants, C14Kn (where C14 denotes the myristic acyl chain and Kn represents n number of lysine residues) at the hydrophobic solid/water interface has been studied using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and neutron reflection (NR). The hydrophobic C8 surface was prepared by grafting a monolayer of octyltrimethoxysilane on the silicon surface....
