Obstructive jaundice in the first months of life is a fairly frequent phenomenon. Approximately twothirds of these infants have atresia of the hepatic ducts, and about two-thirds of the remaining can be classified as 'neonatal hepatitis', 'giant cell hepatitis', or 'thick bile syndrome' (Craig and Landing, 1952; de Toni and Romano, 1962; Gellis, 1961). 'Thick bile syndrome' is defined as 'neona...
Though the perforation of the colon in neonates is rare, it is associated with more than 50% mortality in high-risk patients. We report a case of idiopathic neonatal perforation of the sigmoid colon in an 8-day-old, healthy, male neonate without any demonstrable cause.
The long-term fate of aged liver allografts in young recipients who received grafts from older donors is unknown. We evaluated graft aging by analyzing hepatocytic telomere length and karyotypic changes. Seventeen pediatric individuals who underwent living-donor liver transplantation for congenital biliary diseases were selected. At a median of 10.4 years post-transplant, ten had tolerated graf...
Idiopathic neonatal priapism is a rare pathology with an estimated incidence of 15/10,000 births. Despite the distressing clinical picture, it relatively benign pathology. We report case idiopathic treated in our department, newborn on day 1 life no known pathological family history. The picture was characterized by permanent, painless erection penis associated signs or change skin color. No et...
BACKGROUND RNA sequences of the recently identified hepatitis GB virus C (HGBV-C), also named hepatitis G virus (HGV), have been detected in patients with idiopathic fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) but the role of this agent in the disease remains controversial. AIMS To investigate the presence and implications of HGV infection in a large series of Spanish patients with FHF. PATIENTS Sixty ...
BACKGROUND Pathogenesis of neonatal hepatitis relates to various underlying causes including viral infections. Both hepatotropic and non-hepatotropic viruses may induce liver failures in infants before birth, during delivery, or shortly after birth. OBJECTIVES The tissue impact of HCMV, HSV, HBV, HCV, and rotavirus and adenovirus infections was evaluated in studied infants with neonatal hepat...
OBJECTIVE To notify persons who received a blood transfusion in a neonatal intensive care unit between January 1975 and July 1992 of their risk for hepatitis C infection and to encourage them to seek hepatitis C antibody testing. DESIGN Neonatal intensive care unit, blood bank, and public access records were queried to identify current mailing addresses and persons deceased. All persons were ...
We report three patients with localization-related epilepsy of neonatal onset. They exhibited favourable psychomotor development and had no cerebral lesions on neuroimaging studies despite the presence of intractable partial seizures of neonatal onset. Although rare, some cases of epilepsy of neonatal onset may be cryptogenic, i.e. they belong to neither the symptomatic nor the idiopathic group.
