Methods Atotal of 47 consecutive children underwent surgical repair of distal hypospadias in our department. Urethroplasties were performed by the following techniques: stentless meatal advancement-glanuloplasty (MAGPI) or glans approximation procedure (GAP) for glanular hypospadias (14) and tubularized incised plate (TIP) urethroplasty for coronal, subcoronal and midpenil hypospadias with an i...
This study examined the relation among platelet survival, thrombosis, and repeated vessel injury. With the use of 51Cr-labeled platelets, indwelling aortic catheters were shown to reduce platelet survival in rabbits and rats. In rabbits, thrombi were observed mainly at the aortic bifurcation and at the tip of the catheter. The amount of thrombus that formed in rabbits with short and long cathet...
Intraperitoneal perforation can occur as a rare but life threatening complication of indwelling urethral catheters. Computed tomography (CT) revealed the bladder perforation by the Foley catheter. The injury could not be managed conservatively due to the presence of systemic infection. We present the case of a successful laparoscopic repair of the bladder due to indwelling urethral catheter.
We report 3 patients with the rare complication of an indwelling urethral catheter misdirected into the ureter. This is the largest series to date. Patients were referred to us for a variety of reasons following exchange of their chronic indwelling urinary catheters. CT in all cases demonstrated the urinary catheters residing in the left ureter. The ages of the patients were 37, 67 and 81 years...
The use of a urinary bladder catheter in the perioperative period for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty is controversial. In the current study, two bladder management protocols were studied. One group of patients had an indwelling catheter inserted into the bladder before total knee arthroplasty. The other group of patients was observed and treated for urinary retention as necessary. ...
Indwelling intravascular and urinary catheters are essential components of modern medical care. Unfortunately, indwelling devices significantly increase the risk of iatrogenic infection, particularly in an already fragile patient population. Most nosocomial infections in severely ill patients are associated with the very medical devices that provide life-sustaining care (Ihnsook Jeong et al., 2...
This information on best practice discusses the evidence for the removal of short-term indwelling urethral catheters. The article has been reproduced with the permission of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The article is derived from a systematic review of research published by the JBI,'Comparison of late night and early morning removal of short-term urethral catheters: a systematic review' (...
Forty nine Broviac or Hickman indwelling central venous catheters were inserted in 36 patients with haematological and neoplastic diseases for indications including young age, intensity of treatment, and psychological attitude. Sixteen patients suffered 29 episodes of infection related to the catheter bacteraemia (0.68 episodes per 100 days of catheter use). Infections occurred much more common...
We describe 5 men with urinary retention and indwelling urethral catheters who were treated with repetitive prostatic massage, antimicrobials, alpha blockers, and--in 2 cases--finasteride. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients presenting to the genitourinary clinic with indwelling urinary catheters during a 1-year period. Five men (mean age, 70 years; range, 64-76; SD 4.47) pre...
