The skin friction on a surface is a major concern by engineers. It is widely accepted that turbulent flow has higher friction than laminar flow due to the higher mixing in boundary layer. However, our new high order DNS found that the high friction is generated in a laminar zone in a transitional flow. Whenever the small length scales are generated, the velocity shear becomes very large in the ...

Abstract. The problem of Rayleigh–Bénard convection with internal heat sources and a variable gravity field is treated. For the case of stress-free boundary conditions, it is proved that the principle of exchange of stabilities holds as long as the product of gravity field and the integral of the heat sources is nonnegative throughout the layer. The proof is based on the idea of a positive oper...

The paper is concerned with linear thermoelastic plate equations in a domain Ω: utt +∆u+∆θ = 0 and θt −∆θ −∆ut = 0 in Ω× (0,∞), subject to Dirichlet boundary condition: u|Γ = Dνu|Γ = θ|Γ = 0 and initial condition: (u, ut, θ)|t=0 = (u0, v0, θ0) ∈W 2 p,D(Ω)×Lp×Lp. Here, Ω is a bounded or exterior domain in R (n ≥ 2). We assume that the boundary Γ of Ω is a C hypersurface and we define W 2 p,D by ...

We show herein the uniform stability of a thermoelastic plate model with no added dissipative mechanism on the boundary (uniform stability of a thermoelastic plate with added boundary dissipation was shown in [J. LAGNESE, Boundary Stabilization of Twin Plates, SIAM Stud. Appl. Math. 10, SIAM, Philadelphia, PA, 1989], as was that of the analytic case—where rotational forces are neglected—in [Z. ...

We study a 2-phase free boundary problem for harmonic measure first considered by Kenig and Toro [KT06] and prove a sharp Hölder regularity result. The central difficulty is that there is no a priori non-degeneracy in the free boundary condition. Thus we must establish non-degeneracy by means of monotonicity formulae.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of segmentation of the upstream and downstream parent artery and hemodynamic boundary conditions (BCs) on the evaluated hemodynamic factors for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of intracranial aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three dimensional patient-specific aneurysm models were analyzed by applying various combina...

Flow distortions in high-speed inlet systems are complex, and high-performance air-breathing propulsion systems. In this paper, large eddy simulations performed to study the total pressure swirl a Busemann at freestream Mach number 6. The on-design flow condition with both Attack Angle Sideslip equal zero two off-design conditions (Attack = 6 deg, 0 deg deg) considered explore characteristics i...

The mechanical properties of arteries are implicated in a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases, many of which are expected to involve a strong spatial variation in properties that can be depicted by diagnostic imaging. A pulse wave inverse problem (PWIP) is presented, which can produce spatially resolved estimates of vessel compliance from ultrasound measurements of the vessel wall displacem...

A single rotor CFD model using wall-modeled Large Eddy Simulations (LES) was performed to predict the unsteady loading on the blade surface under partial admission. Geometry of the rotor blade of high pressure steam turbine of a 500 MW fossil-fuel power plant was used for this study. Periodically changing inlet boundary model was developed for single rotor model to simplify a full annular of th...
