Background & Aim: Clonidine, an alpha 2 agonist, attenuates sympathetic responses during general anesthesia and improves the intra-operative hemodynamic stability. In this randomized double blinded clinical trial study, we report the effects of 300µg oral clonidine premedication(n=22) or placebo(n=22) on hemodynamic alteration during gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, under general anesthesi...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate changes in body position and effect of CO2 insufflation on the hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal systems using computed tomography (CT) to determine optimal laparoscopic approach. STUDY DESIGN Experimental study. ANIMALS Healthy intact female Beagles (n = 6) of similar age, weight, and body condition score. METHODS Urinalysis, peripheral blood smear, and abdominal u...

PURPOSE Respiratory acidosis during carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation has been suggested as a cause of spontaneous abortion and preterm labour following laparoscopic cholecystectomy during pregnancy. Capnography may not be adequate as a guide to adjust pulmonary ventilation during laparoscopic surgery and hence arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2) monitoring has been recommended. We report the feasi...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS  Methods to improve polyp detection during colonoscopy have been investigated, with conflicting results for warm water irrigation. Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) warmed to 37 °C may have similar or more pronounced effects on bowel motility. This study aimed to assess whether warmed CO 2 would improve polyp detection compared to room temperature air insufflation. PATIENTS AND ...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although considerable experimental and clinical knowledge exists on the physiology of pneumoperitoneum, insufflation of the preperitoneal space has not been extensively studied. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the physiology associated with preperitoneal carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation in a porcine model. METHODS Eleven pigs weighing 35 to 45 kg were anest...

Laparoscopic sterilizations can be safely performed using room air insufflation. In a series of 400 procedures, the rates of surgical complications were comparable to other laparoscopy studies in which high-pressure gas was used. The purported problems associated with room air insufflation were not encountered in this study.

BACKGROUND The i-gel provides good airway sealing but gastric insufflation may occur when peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) exceeds the sealing pressure of the i-gel without a gastric tube. Pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) provides lower PIP compared with volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) and low PIP may reduce the incidence of gastric insufflation in children during positive pressure vent...

Insufflation of the Fallopian tubes with gases is used as a diagnostic and therapeutic measure in cases of infertility.7 If the tubes are, or become patent the gas enters the peritoneal cavity. This paper reports the results of respiratory capacity measurements in a series of patients undergoing insufflation. There were two aims in this study: (i) To ascertain whether a simple test of respirato...
