Transfusion-dependent anemia is a common feature in a wide array of hematological disorders, including thalassemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis, and myelo-dysplastic syndromes. In the absence of a physiological mechanism to excrete excess iron, chronic transfusions ultimately cause iron overload. Without correction, iron overload can lead to end-organ damage, resulting i...

Chickpea-chelating peptides were purified and analysed for their iron-chelating activity. These peptides were purified after affinity and gel filtration chromatography from a chickpea protein hydrolysate produced with pepsin and pancreatin. Iron-chelating activity was higher in purified peptide fractions than in the original hydrolysate. Histidine contents were positively correlated with the ir...

Rate studies of the addition of n-BuLi in the presence of TMEDA to potentially chelating aldimines are consistent with a combination of monomer- and dimer-based mechanisms. Using mixtures of TMEDA and Et2O reveals cooperative solvation in which both Et2O and TMEDA coordinate to lithium at the monomer- and dimer-based transition structures. The four discrete mechanisms are affiliated with marked...

1. The effect of iron chelators on iron uptake, ferritin and total protein synthesis was studied in cultured Chang cells. Desferrioxamine depressed ferritin synthesis and completely inhibited iron uptake by ferritin protein. Rhodotorulic acid reduced iron uptake by the cells but had little effect on ferritin synthesis. Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid produced complete inhibition of iron upt...

Abstract Thalassemia syndromes are the most common inherited hemoglobinopathies in the world characterized by various degrees of defective production of the alpha or beta globin chains. Impairment in alpha chain or beta chain synthesis leads to alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia syndromes respectively. Iran is one of the countries located on the thalassemia belt therefore this disease is ...

A number of reports have appeared in literature calling attention to the depletion of essential metal ions during chelation therapy on β-thalassaemia patients. We present a speciation study to determine how the iron chelators used in therapy interfere with the homeostatic equilibria of essential metal ions. This work includes a thorough analysis of the pharmacokinetic properties of the chelatin...

The gadolinium(III) chelates Gd(dtpaH2), Gd(hfac)3, Gd(tta)3 and Gd(qu)3 with dtpa1⁄4 1,1,4,7,7-diethylenetriaminepentaacetate, hfac1⁄4 hexafluoroacetylacetonate, tta1⁄4 thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and qu1⁄4 8-quinolinolate (or oxinate) show a phosphorescence under ambient conditions. While the UV emission of Gd(dtpaH2) at kmax 1⁄4 312 nm comes from a metal-centered ff state, the bluish (kmax 1⁄4...

Coordination exchange processes tend to dominate the solution state behaviour of lanthanide chelates and generally prohibit the study of small conformational changes. In this article we take advantage of coordinatively rigid Eu(3+) chelates to examine the small conformational changes that occur in these chelates as water dissociatively exchanges in and out of the inner coordination sphere. The ...

Human synovial fluid, from a patient with synovitis disease, was examined by electron spin resonance spectroscopy for evidence of free radicals. The ascorbate free radical was observed and its intensity was affected by iron chelating agents, demonstrating that the iron in the synovial fluid is indeed available for oxidative catalysis.

BACKGROUND The problems related to conventional Fenton oxidation, including low pH required and production of considerable amounts of sludge have led researchers to investigate chelating agents which might improve the operating range of pH and the use of nano iron particle to reduce the excess sludge. The pyrene removal from contaminated soils by modified Fenton oxidation at neutral pH was defi...
