BACKGROUND/AIMS To compare the penetration of levofloxacin, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in the aqueous humour of eyes with functioning filtering blebs. METHODS In this investigator-masked study, 48 patients with functioning filtering blebs requiring cataract surgery were randomised into six groups of eight patients. Groups 1, 2 and 3 received topical ofloxacin 0.3% (Ocuflox), ciprofloxacin 0....

Levofloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent for oral or intravenous administration. Chemically, levofloxacin is the levorotatory isomer (L-isomer) of racemate ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. Quinolone derivatives rapidly and specifically inhibit the synthesis of bacterial DNA. Levofloxacin has in vitro activity against a broad range of aerobic and anaerobic ...

Cefotaxime, given in two doses (each 100 mg/kg of body weight), produced a good bactericidal activity (-0.47 Deltalog(10) CFU/ml. h) which was comparable to that of levofloxacin (-0.49 Deltalog(10) CFU/ml. h) against a penicillin-resistant pneumococcal strain WB4 in experimental meningitis. Cefotaxime combined with levofloxacin acted synergistically (-1.04 Deltalog(10) CFU/ml. h). Synergy betwe...

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to study the uptake of levofloxacin for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori by human gastric epithelial cell lines, GES-1 and MGC80-3. MATERIALS AND METHODS High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and coomassie brilliant blue staining, among other methods, were used to study the uptake of levofloxacin in GES-1 and MGC80-3 cells. The effect of time,...

The antibacterial activities of levofloxacin, erythromycin, and rifampin against intracellular Legionella pneumophila L-1033, serogroup 1, were studied. In an in vitro system utilizing adherent human monocytes, L. pneumophila L-1033, a phagocytosis time period of 1 h, and antibiotic (levofloxacin, erythromycin, and/or rifampin) at 1 to 10 times the MIC, the CFU/ml values for the monocyte lysate...

BACKGROUND First-line levofloxacin-based treatments eradicate Helicobacter pylori with varying success. We examined the efficacy and safety of first-line levofloxacin-based treatment in comparison to standard first-line therapy for H pylori eradication. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched literature databases from Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Register of Randomized Controlled Trials throug...

The combination of levofloxacin and α1 adrenergic antagonist treatment is the current preferred choice for both bacterial and non-bacterial prostatitis. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of α1 adrenergic antagonists on the pharmacokinetics of levofloxacin using rat models with acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP) induced by direct injection with Escherichia coli (ATCC25922). A tota...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to update data on levofloxacin/ciprofloxacin and triple resistance (resistance to metronidazole, clarithromycin and levofloxacin/ciprofloxacin) in Helicobacter pylori clinical isolates and to identify the impact of prior eradication therapies on their development. METHODS We tested the antimicrobial susceptibility to amoxicillin, metronidazole, clarithromy...

The relationship between prior fluoroquinolone use and levofloxacin resistance in Helicobacter pylori infection is unknown. Among 125 enrolled patients, 8.8% had H. pylori isolates that were resistant to levofloxacin. Levofloxacin resistance was associated with any prior fluoroquinolone use over the previous 10 years and with the total number of fluoroquinolone courses prescribed (P<.001).

BACKGROUND Yersinia pestis, the agent of plague, is considered a potential bioweapon due to rapid lethality when delivered as an aerosol. Levofloxacin was tested for primary pneumonic plague treatment in a nonhuman primate model mimicking human disease. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-four African Green monkeys (AGMs, Chlorocebus aethiops) were challenged via head-only aerosol inhalation with 3-14...
