Fog is a hazardous weather event that can endanger navigation, aviation, and transportation. While human has several limitations in detecting forecasting offshore fog, satellite remote sensing offers cost-effective images. In this study, probability-based daytime sea fog detection algorithm, applied to geostationary operational environmental (GOES) 16 data over the Grand Banks Eastern Canada, p...
Self-renewal of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) is maintained by leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) signaling. However, this signaling control does not function in neither mouse epiblast stem cells (mEpiSCs) nor human ESCs (hESCs) or human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). To date, the underlying molecular mechanisms that determin...
We have a previously reported that interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a potent but IL-6-unrelated growth factor for freshly explanted myeloma cells (Lu et al, Blood 85:2521, 1995). We have also shown that exogenous IL-10 supported the growth of XG-1 and XG-2 human myeloma cell lines (HMCL) through an IL-6-independent mechanism. (Lu et al, Blood 85:2521, 1995). Because the IL-10 receptor does not involve...
In this paper we present LiFR, a lightweight DL reasoner capable of performing in resource-constrained devices, that implements a fuzzy extension of Description Logic Programs. Preliminary evaluation against two existing fuzzy DL reasoners and within a real-world use case has shown promising results.
Cardiotrophin (CT-1) is a naturally occurring protein member of the interleukin (IL)-6 cytokine family and signals through the gp130/leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) heterodimer. The formation of gp130/LIFR complex triggers the auto/trans-phosphorylation of associated Janus kinases, leading to the activation of Janus kinase/STAT and MAPK (ERK1 and -2) signaling pathways. Since adipocy...
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to determine whether the leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is expressed in human dental tissue and exerts its effect on proliferation and odontoblastic differentiation of the dental pulp cells (DPCs). METHODS An immunohistochemical assay was used to detect the expression of LIF and leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) in the human dental pulp. T...
Methylated-DNA sequencing technologies are producing vast amounts of methylome data from cancer samples, from which cancer-associated differentially methylated CpG sites (cDMCs) are continuously identified and filed. The inclusion of as many cDMCs as possible helps improve the accuracy of cancer diagnosis and sometimes identify cancer subtypes. However, the lack of an established method for the...

Knockout of the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) gene results in disrupted placental architecture, imbalanced bone development, and losses of functional neurons. We here report the identification of an enhancer in a functional human LIFR gene promoter and alternative promoter usage by this gene. A single transcription start site was identified in placental JEG-3 cells and a genomic cl...
In the developing forebrain, mounting evidence suggests that neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation is regulated by growth factors. In vitro in the presence of serum, stem cell proliferation is predominantly mediated by fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) whereas neuronal differentiation can be triggered by FGF-1 in association with a specific heparan sulphate proteoglycan. On the ot...
