BACKGROUND To determine the outcome and patterns of failure in oral cavity cancer (OCC) patients after postoperative intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with concomitant systemic therapy. METHODS All patients with locally advanced (AJCC stage III/IV) or high-risk OCC (AJCC stage II) who underwent postoperative IMRT at our institution between December 2006 and July 2010 were retrospectivel...
background: we conducted a retrospective analysis to evaluate the impact of omission of supraclavicular radiotherapy on supraclavicular failure rate and treatment outcomes in n1 breast cancer patients with evaluation of prognostic factors that affected supraclavicular recurrence free survival. methods: this study analyzed the medical records of 109 patients with n1 breast cancer. all patients u...
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare disease in children. Children with NPC almost always have the undifferentiated variant of the disease, which is associated with advanced locoregional and distant metastasis. We report two cases to illustrate that high index of suspicion is necessary to diagnose NPC in children especially those with atypical presentation of otitis media with effusion (OME).
Mucosal melanoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is seldom encountered in routine ENT practice. These tumors have poor prognosis owing to higher rates of locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis. Various treatment modalities have been employed over time but the ideal treatment approach still remains an open issue. This article presents some commonly accepted guidelines in treati...
Post-mastectomy radiotherapy has been demonstrated to improve locoregional control in breast cancer patients. We report a case involving a 44-year-old breast cancer patient who presented with a solitary bone metastasis in the area beneath the shoulder shield, likely from a coincidental recurrence.
BACKGROUND Although black patients experience worse outcomes after treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC), these conclusions were based on populations in which blacks comprised a minority of patients. The objective of the current study was to determine the impact of race on outcomes in patients with HNSCC who received radiotherapy at an institution in which blacks co...
Aim: To evaluate the survival outcomes and prognostic factors in acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland, a retrospective study was designed. Material Method: Consecutive patients diagnosed with treated surgery adjuvant radiotherapy were retrospectively reviewed. Data regarding age, sex, TNM stage, pathologic characteristics, treatment details, follow-up examinations collected analysed. The prim...
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Knowledge of histopathological factors, such as perineural invasion (PNI), extracapsular spread (ECS), angiolymphatic vessel invasion, and conglomerate lymph nodes, in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is important for appropriate treatment decisions. Given the availability of aggressive therapeutic options with known side effects and burdens for the pati...
Merkel cell carcinoma is an aggressive neuroendocrine cutaneous malignancy with a predilection for regional and distant metastasis. This malignancy presents most commonly on the head and neck of elderly Caucasian males, with a higher prevalence in the immunosuppressed. A high index of suspicion must be maintained due to the often asymptomatic presentation. Lip tumors, scalp tumors, local invasi...
PURPOSE Moesin is a linking protein of the submembraneous cytoskeleton and plays a key role in the control of cell morphology, adhesion, and motility. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the clinical significance of expression patterns of moesin in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Immunohistochemistry for moesin monoclonal antibody was performed...
