Considering the great impact of a material's surface area on adsorption processes, hollow nanotube magnetic zinc oxide with a favorable surface area of 78.39 m²/g was fabricated with the assistance of microwave technology in the presence of poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) as a stabilizing agent followed by sonic precipitation of magnetite nano-particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmis...

Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to study the reorientation of single wall carbon nanotubes in a polyethylene matrix under the influence of a 25 T magnetic field. The simulations are based on a variant of velocity Verlet algorithm, which relaxes the Larmor time-step restriction while preserving second-order accuracy. Simulations reveal that the unfolding and reorganization of the ...

DNA-wrapped halloysite nanotubes were obtained by a mechanochemical reaction in the solid state. The characterization by scanning electron microscopy showed that the nanotubes were cut into shorter lengths and were completely covered with DNA. This resulted in a high aqueous solubility of the product with stability of the solution for about 6 weeks. The nanotubes were cut to different fractions...

We propose a continuum theory of orientational phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field in a suspension of carbon nanotubes in a nematic liquid crystal. It is shown that in a magnetic field a non-uniform and two different uniform phases are possible in the suspension. The uniform phases of the suspension differ by the type of orientational coupling of nanotubes with the liquid cr...

We compute the magnetic shielding tensor within the London approximation and estimate the Knight shift of single-wall carbon nanotubes. Our results indicate that high resolution 13C NMR should be able to separate the metallic and insulator character of the nanotubes since a 11 ppm splitting is predicted from the respective resonances. As a model for disorder, bending, and defects in these struc...

The unique properties of graphene and carbon nanotubes made them the most promising nanomaterials attracting enormous attention, due to the prospects for applications in various nanodevices, from nanoelectronics to sensors and energy conversion devices. Here we report on a novel deterministic, single-step approach to simultaneous production and magnetic separation of graphene flakes and carbon ...

An effective and versatile method for tube-length-specific functionalization of carbon nanotubes through a controllable embedment of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes into polymer matrices is reported, which allows not only asymmetric functionalization of nanotube sidewalls, but also facile introduction of new properties (e.g. magnetic) onto the region-selectively functionalized carbon nanotu...

We have investigated the magnetoconductance of semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in pulsed, parallel magnetic fields up to 60 T, and report the direct observation of the predicted band-gap closure and the reopening of the gap under variation of the applied magnetic field. We also highlight the important influence of mechanical strain on the magnetoconductance of the CNTs.

Magnetic heterostructures with carbon nanotubes having multiple functionalities are fascinating materials which can be manipulated by means of an external magnetic field. In this paper we report our investigations on the synthesis and optical limiting properties of pristine cobalt nanotubes and high coercivity cobalt-in-carbon nanotubes (a new nanosystem where carbon nanotubes are filled with c...

An in deep study of the functionalization of carbon nanotubes for their application as peptides and DNA carriers is presented. Designed amphiphilic polypeptides are used to study the dispersion properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and to measure the properties of the carbon nanotube-polypeptide complexes. These properties allow the design of methods for using carbon nanotubes a...
