Intensive forest management led to elevated losses of nitrogen from a recently harvested loblolly pine plantation in North Carolina. Measurements of nitrogen-15 retention in the field demonstrated that microbial uptake of nitrogen during the decomposition of residual organic material was the most important process retaining nitrogen. Management practices that remove this material cause increase...

the demand for low fat snacks is increasing. there are different methods to produce low fat fried products. one of these methods is coating. in this study effect of carrageenan, oil temperature and frying time, on oil uptake of fried products (chips and strips) has been evaluated. samples were deep fried in frying oil (palm olein) at 160, 175 and 190 ºc. in order to evaluate the effect of fryin...

fertilizers usually enhance potassium (k) content and other naturally occurring radioactive materials in agricultural fields that eventually enter the human food chain through plants. in this study, pot-grown rice plants planted in soil that is relatively high in natural radioactive content was used to estimate the individual influence of fertilizer applications on the uptake of 226ra, 232th, a...

Size, surface charge, and material compositions are known to influence cell uptake of nanoparticles. However, the effect of particle geometry, i.e., the interplay between nanoscale shape and size, is less understood. Here we show that when shape is decoupled from volume, charge, and material composition, under typical in vitro conditions, mammalian epithelial and immune cells preferentially int...

This study highlights the importance of the anion in the electrochemical uptake of lithium by metal phosphides. It is shown through a variety of in-situ and ex-situ analytical techniques that the redox active centers in three different systems (MnP4, FeP2, and CoP3) are not necessarily cationic but can rest almost entirely upon the anionic network, thanks to the high degree of covalency of the ...

The ability of a complex mixture of organic compounds found in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) to act as a photosensitizer in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was investigated. Different types of SOAs were produced in a smog chamber by oxidation of various biogenic and anthropogenic VOCs. The SOA particles were collected from the chamber onto an inert substrate, and the result...

The production of rod outer segment material and its fate in the retina of the dystrophic rat was studied by autoradiographic technique. The pigment epithelium of the dystrophic rat shows an inability to remove its rod outer segment material. By 36 days of age, photoreceptor outer segment production in the dystrophic rat gradually ceases, although uptake of amino acids by the inner segment stil...

The study was focused on two goals: (i) the confirmation of the existence of a general relation between the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludge and in plants growing in it, regardless of the type and content of sewage sludge, and (ii) if so, the answer to the question whether the uptake of PAHs by plants depends on their type. To realize the set aims, the content...

Objective. To test the effectiveness of adding a narrative leaflet to the current information material delivered by the NHS English colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programme on reducing socioeconomic inequalities in uptake. Participants. 150,417 adults (59-74 years) routinely invited to complete the guaiac Faecal Occult Blood test (gFOBt) in March 2013. Design. A cluster randomised controlled...

The CO(2) uptake on nanoscale AlO(OH) hollow spheres (260 mg g(-1)) as a new material is comparable to that on many metal-organic frameworks although their specific surface area is much lower (530 m(2) g(¬1)versus 1500-6000 m(2) g(¬1)). Suited temperature-pressure cycles allow for reversible storage and separation of CO(2) while the CO(2) uptake is 4.3-times higher as compared to N(2).
