Microsporidia are worldwide ubiquitous intracellular protozoan parasites, which have recently emerged as a significant cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients, particularly in those with AIDS.' Multiorgan microsporidiosis is well described in these individuals, which underscores the severity of immunodeficiency in patients with microsporidial infection.2 3 In 15-30% of patients with ad...

We examined stool specimens of 148 returning travelers from an outpatient department for tropical diseases for the appearance of microsporidia using light microscopy and PCR. Intestinal microsporidiosis was diagnosed for five patients by light microscopy and for nine patients by PCR. Some cases were diagnosed only by PCR, indicating that the true prevalence has to be determined by highly sensit...

The ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer sequences of 13 unrelated Encephalitozoon intestinalis isolates obtained from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with intestinal microsporidiosis were analyzed by gene amplification and DNA sequencing. Among these isolates, we found only one genetic lineage which suggests that E. intestinalis may have a clonal distribution in HIV-i...

A 49-year-old renal transplant recipient was admitted to our hospital due to abundant liquid diarrhea and dehydration. Parasitological investigations, including genotyping, led to the diagnosis of intestinal microsporidiosis due to a new and highly divergent internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genotype of Enterocytozoon bieneusi. The potential route of transmission through horse stools is discussed.

BACKGROUND Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites causing severe infections with lethal outcome in immunocompromised hosts. However, these pathogens are more frequently reported as latent infections in immunocompetent individuals and raises questions about the potential risk of reactivation following induced immunosuppression. AIMS To evaluate the possibility latent microsporidios...

Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi were detected in 45, 35, and 116 of 411 free-range rhesus monkeys, respectively, in a popular public park in the People's Republic of China. Most genotypes and subtypes detected were anthroponotic, indicating these animals might be reservoirs for human cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and microsporidiosis.
