Comparative immunodiffusion studies and thin-layer chromatographic analyses of whole-organism acid methanolysates were performed on 37 strains of Mycobacterium farcinogenes, Mycobacterium senegalense and Nocardia farcinica. The latter were clearly distinguished from the mycobacteria in containing a single mycolic acid methyl ester and showing more precipitinogens with nocardial than with mycoba...

Background: Diabetes is an important metabolic disease with myriad manifestations and complications, affecting many people. Cutaneous infections impact numerous diabetic patients. Among different bacterial infections in diabetic patients, the infections caused by mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MOTT) eventuate in complications owing to the paucity of accurate detection...

Recent outbreaks of nosocomial infections caused by organisms identified as the Mycobacterium fortuitum complex suggest that species and subspecies identification is epidemiologically important. In a study of 170 strains, M. fortuitum was differentiated from M. chelonei by nitrate reduction and iron uptake. M. fortuitum was further divided into biovariant fortuitum, biovar peregrinum, and an un...

In 2000, an outbreak of Mycobacterium fortuitum furunculosis affected customers using whirlpool footbaths at a nail salon. We swabbed 30 footbaths in 18 nail salons from 5 California counties and found mycobacteria in 29 (97%); M. fortuitum was the most common. Mycobacteria may pose an infectious risk for pedicure customers.

Treatment of tuberculosis (TB) is a challenge because of multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Plant species contain antimicrobial compounds that may lead to new anti-TB drugs. Previous screening of some tree species from the Anacardiaceae family revealed the presence of antimicrobial activity, justifying further investigations. Leaf extracts of...

BackgroundThe natural resistance of rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) to multiple antibiotics renders the treatment infections caused less successful. The objective this study was evaluate in vitro susceptibilities four oxazolidinones against different RGM species.MethodsThe microplate alamarBlue assay performed identify minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) – delpazolid, sutezolid, tedizol...

Mycobacteriosis is a chronic disease of freshwater and marine fish. In the present study, Mycobacterium fortuitum from a diseased gold fish, Carassius auratus was isolated and identified by biochemical and molecular (PCR) method. The isolate was found to be resistant to rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide and ethambutol and myoconda® a nanodrug combination of rifampicin, clarithromycin and clof...
