Current network modeling practices usually assess the network performance at specified time interval, i.e. every 5 or 10 years time horizon. Furthermore, they are usually based on partially predictable data, which are being generated through various stochastic procedures. In this research, a new quantitative based methodology which combines combinatorial optimization modeling and transportation...

We propose different formulations as well as efficient solution approaches for the VPN design problem under traffic uncertainty with symmetric bandwidths.

Survivability refers to keeping a system partially or fully operational when one or more of its components fail. Survivability in telecommunication networks is crucial, as failure of a network component can potentially bring down the whole communication network, as happened in some real-world cases. Adding redundant network components increases the survivability of a network, but cost of the ne...

Different schemes of dispersion management for cascaded transmission systems composed of standard monomode fibers (SMFS) and dispersion compensating fibers have been studied considering the most essential boundary conditions for practical network design. Alternating ordering of the compensation sections is found to improve considerably the eye opening penalty for high amplifier spacings of 120 km.

This paper presents a first look at long-term delay measurements from data connections in 3 Norwegian 3G Networks. We have performed active measurements for more than 6 months from 90 voting locations used in a trial with electronic voting during this fall’s regional elections. Our monitors are geographically spread across all of Norway, and give an unprecedented view of the performance and sta...

This paper highlights the opportunities and challenges of applying Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to support capacity planning of a network of outpatient facilities. Despite an abundance of studies using simulation techniques to examine the operation and performance of outpatient clinics, the problem of capacity allocation and planning of medical services within a network of outpatient healthc...

This paper considers the time-dependent service network design problem with stochastic demand represented by scenarios. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to address real life-size instances of this problem. The model integrates the balancing of empty vehicles, the cost of handling freight in intermediate terminals, the costs associated with moving freight using the selected services, ...

Within the field of information systems an interest in environmental issues has driven the agenda for research from green IT improvement to sustainable innovation. A challenge yet to investigate is how sustainable innovation involving a cluster of actors from multiple settings should be 1) designed and 2) orchestrated so that the innovation performed enables sustainable change. Processes for la...

Combining with agricultural production practice, we propose the agriculture wireless and humidity sensor network design, which is based on ZigBee technology. And we use the chip based on the CC2530 ZigBee protocol as the sensor nodes and coordinator nodes for data collection, transmission and display, aiming to realize the agricultural production automation and precision agriculture.

A number of fields, including genome rearrangements and interconnection network design, are concerned with sorting permutations in “as few moves as possible”, using a given set of allowed operations. These often act on just one or two segments of the permutation, e.g. by reversing one segment or exchanging two segments. The cycle graph of the permutation to sort is a fundamental tool in the the...
