Two fatal cases of infection with Nocardia asteroides are described with necropsy findings in one. Both patients had been anaemic and had received steroid therapy. The bacteriological problems of species recognition in the genus Nocardia are considered and the results of infection in experimental animals described.

A 22-year-old man with recurrent pharyngitis developed a peritonsillar abscess from which aspirated material yielded a pure culture of Nocardia asteroides. It is likely that the organism was introduced iatrogenically during a prior tonsillar incision. Although unusual, Nocardia species should be considered and microbiological specimens should be handled appropriately in pharyngeal abscesses tha...

Pericarditis with hemodynamic compromise is a rare manifestation of infection with Nocardia asteroides. To our knowledge, only six cases have been reported previously. In contrast to other cases of pericardial disease due to Nocardia, culture of the pericardial fluid in our case was negative while culture of pericardial tissue led to the diagnosis. Surgical intervention and appropriate antibiot...

Background: Nocardia species are Gram-positive, partially acid fast, non-motile, catalase positive, aerobic and saprophytic actinomycetes found all around the world. They invade the human body from the environment via trauma and respiratory tract and cause cutaneous, pulmonary and systemic diseases. They are able to grow in various media. The organisms opportunistically infect both immunocomprom...

A 39-year-old man with a history of injection drug abuse was given a diagnosis of Nocardia asteroides native aortic valve endocarditis, and he required valve replacement therapy, despite having received potent antimicrobial therapy. This is the first reported proven case of native valve endocarditis due to Nocardia species.

Nocardia cyriacigeorgica has recently been described as an "emerging" pathogen. However, DNA-DNA hybridization results confirm that Nocardia asteroides drug pattern type VI, which has long been recognized as a common and significant pathogen in the United States, belongs to the species N. cyriacigeorgica.

Presence of fungal agents in lesions of two patients in Tehran was studied. One of them had clinical symptoms of mycetoma in his foot, and the other had a skin infection in his arm. Examination of the lesions indicated Nocardia asteroides. These patients did not show any evidence of nocardia infection in other parts of the body. Negative results were obtained from the cultures of blood and...
