Mycobacterium tilburgii is a nonculturable nontuberculous mycobacterium identifiable only by molecular methods. We report a case of disseminated M. tilburgii infection illustrating the importance of 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the responsible mycobacterial pathogen and the difficulties in tailoring antimycobacterial treatment in the absence of a culturable organism.

Mycobacterium lentiflavum is a recently described nontuberculous mycobacterium that has mainly clinical importance in young children with cervical lymphadenitis and in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of chronic pulmonary infection in an immunocompetent patient. Our observation confirms clinical, diagnostic, and treatment difficulties in the management of M. lentiflavum infection.

Cord formation is a characteristic property of the cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex species. We describe a case of Mycobacterium marinum demonstrating robust cord formation. Nontuberculous mycobacteria can form true cords in broth culture but do so rarely, despite the fact that many species contain the cell wall glycolipid that mediates cord formation.

Mycobacterium heckeshornense is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium first characterized in 2000. It is reported to cause lung disease and tenosynovitis. We report a case of isolated massive axillary lymphadenopathy in an elderly woman, where histology showed necrotizing granulomata and M. heckeshornense was isolated as the causative organism.

Mycobacterium massiliense is a nontuberculous mycobacterium associated with human infections. We report here the draft genome sequence of M. massiliense strain M159, isolated from the bronchial aspirate of a patient who had a pulmonary infection. This strain showed genotypic and in vitro resistance to a number of tetracyclines and beta-lactam antibiotics.
