BACKGROUND The causes of neonatal transient hypothyroidism (NTH) remain incompletely understood. Whether it is influenced by genetic background is rarely discussed and remains unproven. A defect in thyroid peroxidase is a common cause of dyshormonogenesis of the thyroid gland in Taiwanese, with a novel mutation (2268insT) present in nearly 90% of alleles studied. OBJECTIVE To determine if the...

Escherichia coli endonuclease VIII and endo-nuclease III are oxidative base excision repair DNA glycosylases that remove oxidized pyrimidines from DNA. The genes encoding these proteins, nei and nth, are both co-transcribed as the terminal genes in operons. nei is the terminal gene in an operon with four open reading frames that encode proteins of unknown function. This operon has two confirmed...

INTRODUCTION Infectious diseases are one of the major causes of child mortality in India. Pediatric patients are commonly prescribed antibiotics for non-bacterial infections. Monitoring of local antibiotic prescribing with respect to the diagnosis is necessary to improve the prescribing practices. The aim of the study was to describe antibiotic prescribing for potential infections among patient...

In growing cells, apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites generated spontaneously or resulting from the enzymatic elimination of oxidized bases must be processed by AP endonucleases before they compromise cell integrity. Here, we investigated how AP sites and the processing of these noncoding lesions by the AP endonucleases Nfo, ExoA, and Nth contribute to the production of mutations (hisC952, metB5, ...

We investigate theoretically the nonlinear propagation of the limited diffraction Bessel beam in nonlinear media, under the successive approximation of the KZK equation. The result shows that the nth-order harmonic of the Bessel beam, like its fundamental component, is radially limited diffracting, and that the main beamwidth of the nth-order harmonic is exactly 1/n times that of the fundamental.

A tiie-differencing scheme consisting of an initializing step and N repetitions of a set of steps is proposed. For linear equations, the scheme is of Nth order. It is easily programmed and uses a minimal amount of storage space. The order may be changed by changing one parameter. An improved scheme is of Nth order even for nonlinear equations , for N 54.

We prove a version for motivic cohomology of Thomason’s theorem on Bott-periodic K-theory, namely, that for a field k containing the nth roots of unity, the mod n motivic cohomology of a smooth k-scheme agrees with mod n étale cohomology, after inverting the element in H(k, Z/n(1)) corresponding to a primitive nth root of unity.

We use the ultraproduct technique to study local properties of basic quantities of information-based complexity theory – the n-th minimal errors. We consider linear and nonlinear operators in normed spaces, information consists of continuous linear functionals and is assumed to be adaptive. We establish ultrastability and disprove regularity of n-th minimal errors. As a consequence, we answer a...

Cooperative diversity networks have recently been proposed as a promising technology to improve performance over fading channels. In this paper, we consider incremental amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative diversity networks which employ the Nth best relay when the best relay is unavailable due to issues such as scheduling or load balancing. The end-to-end performance is analyzed over independe...
