We have designed a system that can automatically generate a real optical illusion puppet from any input individual frontal-view face photo. The basic function of the system is to capture the human face from the given photo and correctly transform it onto a fixed template. The final product is a 2-D layout that can be printed out for further assembling.
We propose a one-way invisible cloak using transformation optics of parity-time (PT) symmetric optical materials. At the spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking point, light is scattered only for incidence along one direction since the phase-matching condition is unidirectionally satisfied, making the cloak one-way invisible. Moreover, optical scattering from the one-way cloak can be further engineere...
Natural Sciences[1] Natural Sciences[1]Biology; The body [2]Psychology [3]The brain [4]Norway [5]Forskning.no [6] Which of the figures below is brightest in the middle? Maybe when your brain plays tricks on you it isn?t a mistake, but rather a sort of improvement on reality. It’s an old philosophical question: when you walk down the street, seeing, smelling, hearing and feeling the environment ...
The degree of optical illusion was assessed using standard Muller-Lyer lines in two groups (yoga and control) of thirty subjects each. All subjects were between eighteen and forty two years of age. The difference between the reading at which the lines were actually equal and the reading at which the subject felt them to be equal, was noted as the degree of illusion ("di"). Each subject was asse...
Fish are a complex taxonomic group, whose diversity and distance from other vertebrates well suits the comparative investigation of brain and behavior: in fish species we observe substantial differences with respect to the telencephalic organization of other vertebrates and an astonishing variety in the development and complexity of pallial structures. We will concentrate on the contribution of...
It is proposed in this paper that many geometrical optical illusions, as well as illusory patterns due to motion signals in line drawings, are due to the statistics of visual computations. The interpretation of image patterns is preceded by a step where image features such as lines, intersections of lines, or local image movement must be derived. However, there are many sources of noise or unce...
A 74-year-old woman underwent myelography with iohexol to exclude a CSF leak. Three days later, her son noticed mild facial asymmetry and took her back to the hospital. Neurologic status was at baseline except for minimal left nasolabial flattening. Initial head CT appeared to show diffuse cerebral edema (figure, A), but the following morning the appearance had normalized (figure, B). Based on ...
Visual perception depends on the visual context and is likely to be influenced by size constancy, which predicts a size and distance invariant perception of objects. However, size constancy can also result in optical illusions that allow the manipulation of the perceived size. We thus asked whether the integration of local elements into a global object can be influenced by manipulations of the ...
Gibson argued that illusory pictorial displays contain “inadequate” information (1966, p. 288) but also that a “very special kind of selective attention” (p. 313) can dispel the illusion esuggesting that adequate perceptual information could in fact be potentially available to observers. The present paper describes Gibson's treatment of geometrical illusions and reviews pertinent empirical evid...
