Introduction The optical-label switching (OLS) technology supports transparent all-optical routing and sophisticated network functions by processing the short label in the electronic domain while leaving the data payload in the all-optical domain [1]. In this way, the routing is independent of the payload data format and bit rate. Moreover, with the help of electronic circuit, the router can su...

This paper presents a novel scheme for scheduling packet traac on a wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) local optical network which employs a wavelength router. An N physical wavelengths. We propose TDM schedules for interconnecting MN nodes with a wavelength router. We show that for non-zero transceiver tuning time, throughput on the order of N can be achieved.

The IST-LASAGNE project aims at designing and implementing the first, modular, scalable and truly alloptical photonic router capable of operating at 40 Gb/s. The main results achieved in the project are presented in this paper, with emphasis on the implementation of network node functionalities employing optical logic gates and optical flip-flops, as well as an economical study on the proposed ...

Recent advances in generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) [1,12] and the extensive study and understanding of packet-over-optical network architecture, has made it possible for a single integrated control plane to manage the resources of the packet network and underlying optical transport network in an unified manner. This opens up the possibility for coordinated actions across the t...

A detailed analytical traffic model for all-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) photonic packet-switched networks is presented and the requirements for buffer size and link dimensions are analyzed. This paper shows that due to the topology, packets may generate traffic bottlenecks produced by a tendency of the routing scheme to send packets with different destinations through preferr...

In an optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) network with all-optical routers, system performance, that is, the bit-error rate (BER), is limited by a number of additional noise sources due to the router. In this paper, we investigate the noise contribution due to the crosstalk and relative intensity noise (RIN) within the router, and derive an expression for the BER. We also show that the pow...

Traffic grooming continues to be a rich area of research in the context of WDM optical networks. We provide an overview of the optical and electronic grooming techniques available with focus on IP as the client layer. We discuss the various architectural alternatives available : peer, overlay and augmented models. We first provide a survey on the research work in the area of traffic grooming in...

Photonic packet switches can offer high data rates and format transparency as required by future communication system. Although electronic technology can achieve high switching speed, it is not compatible with the transmission bandwidths of the fiber-optic links. This paper is concerned with alloptical time division multiplexing router based on all-optical switching device. Three terahertz opti...
