The potential role of outer membrane proteins in electron transfer to insoluble Fe(III) oxides by Geobacter sulfurreducens was investigated because this organism is closely related to the Fe(III) oxide-reducing organisms that are predominant in many Fe(III)-reducing environments. Two of the most abundant proteins that were easily sheared from the outer surfaces of intact cells were c-type cytoc...

The kinetics of microbial amorphous Fe(III) oxide reduction was investigated in sediments from a freshwater wetland in north central Alabama, USA. Fe(III) oxide concentrations decreased exponentially with time during anaerobic incubation of sediment slurries and homogenized surface sediments. Rates of organic carbon mineralization (SCO2 1 CH4 accumulation) did not change markedly during the cou...

Biomineralized ferric oxide microbial mats are ubiquitous features on Earth, are common in hot springs of Yellowstone National Park (YNP, WY, USA), and form due to direct interaction between microbial and physicochemical processes. The overall goal of this study was to determine the contribution of different community members to the assembly and succession of acidic high-temperature Fe(III)-oxi...

Background & Aim: Occlusion of organs artery results in ischemia and the opening of occluded artery leads to tissue lesion identified as reperfusion injury(RI). Oxygen-derived free radicals seem to be involved in the reperfusion injury. In this experimental study the effects of 5-aminosalicylic acid(5-ASA), a prescribed drug for ulcerative colitis, was assessed. 5-ASA is a potent scavenger ...

To evaluate the relationship of various P fractions and alkaline phosphatase activity with bean indices growing in 10 calcareous soils, amended with municipal sewage sludge from Chaharmahal-Va-Bakhtiari province, a greenhouse research was carried out. Soil samples were incubated for one month with sludge at a rate equivalent to 1% (w/w). Then, the P fractions, including P adsorbed by Fe and Al ...

The properties of a magnetically ordered buried Fe oxide layer are presented. This oxide has a room-temperature magnetization exceeding that of Fe3O4 by 42% and of gamma-Fe2O3 by 89%. The oxide consists of a component (70%) with a net moment of 2.0 micro(B)/Fe ion, while the remaining spins yield no net moment. The oxide magnetization is stabilized in part by the proximate Fe metal.

iron deficiency in soil reduces the quality of durum wheat leading to fe deficiency in human. thus, this experiment investigated the effects of foliar application of nano-iron oxide (2 and 4 g l-1), iron chelate (edta), (4 and 8 g l-1), iron sulfate (4 and 8 g l-1), and the control on grain yield and quality, yield components, chlorophyll and carotenoids contents, peroxidase (pox), catalase (ca...

Recently, the use of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONS) as a new and promising source of iron in agriculture has been suggested that further investigation is needed before extensive field use. In a greenhouse experiment, the effect of coated magnetite nanoparticles with humic acid (Fe3O4/HA NPs) was investigated on iron deficiency chlorosis and photosynthesis efficiency compare...

Recent experimental studies permit development of conceptual and quantitative models of microbial Fe(III) oxide reduction at circumneutral pH that can be compared to and contrasted with established models of abiotic mineral dissolution. The findings collectively support a model for controls on enzymatic reduction that differs fundamentally from those applied to abiotic reductive dissolution as ...
